During the early 1700s, Ireland experienced economic and social turmoil— unemployment was high, Ireland was experiencing a social class war, and lower class families struggled to obtain food. Renowned author, Jonathan Swift, sarcastically proposes that the country set a quota of 100,000 children to be set aside as a food supply. Swift’s over exaggerated proposal is a subliminal message to the Irish Government that has done nothing to mend the factious and fractured social classes and economy of their country. Throughout “A Modest Proposal,” Swift theorizes a process analysis of the system and social conventions that would be established if Ireland were actually to resort to cannibalism. In his sarcasm, Swift uses many instances of over exaggeration, similes, and parables to convey his obscured message about government reformation.

Abuse and violence never solves anything. Animal abuse is a very serious problem in today's world. The ASPCA is an organization that is against animal abuse, its acronym stands for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The organization is very known for their long, sad, and emotional commercial. Throughout the commercial, it contains the three rhetorical appeals: ethos, logos, and pathos.

Dr. Loury speaks with no circumscription against his opponents. Therefore, he tries to influence the emotions of the reader by using an accusatory tone when referring to his critics ' ideas as "dangerous." Loury (2013) effectively uses the device of metaphor to help his readers understand his argument when he says, "One could use a color-blind instrument to pursue racial goals and color-conscious instruments to pursue goals that are not necessarily racially defined" (p. 347). Loury doesn 't believe that color-blind policies can guarantee racial equality. But, can 't they?

In the book, Getting A Healthy Start, Kalman said, “Nutrition is the food you eat and the nourishing elements it contains, and energy is the power your body needs to function, or work” (Kalman, p4.). Providing one’s body with healthy and nutritious foods is crucial because the body needs the nutrients in order to function properly. In Steingraber’s essay, Most Children Don’t Like Spinach, But I Am A Child Who Does, she enforces the idea that children should be exposed to healthy food because it provides children with the nutrients they need to grow. The author describes how her children’s eating habits and relationship with food are unlike most children. Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal,” examines the proposal of consuming human flesh in order to solve the dilemma of the Potato Famine, in which drought was exacerbated by crop failures, and this tribulation of the Irish was largely snubbed by English landowners. His ironic persona (speaker), is one of confidence, reason, and worth. In addition, this persona presents a multitude of rhetorical strategies to prepare the audience for this overly deranged proposal, ranging from juxtapositions, to using emotion, reason, and credibility, to persuade the reader. Therefore, the ironic persona in “A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift illustrates a wide assortment of rhetorical devices to convey the solution to the Potato Famine, and more broadly, Swift intended this ironic platform to serve as an expository of the avarice of landowners and their gain for self-interest.

Have you ever wonder how does a crime scene investigator, known as a CSI, discover blood spatter on different fabrics, which is not visible to the human eye? The key is bluestar. According to the article “Influence of Bluestar Reagent on Blood Spatter Stain of Different Fabrics” by Arnon Grafit, bluestar is a “luminol-based reagent that is applied by spraying on surface.” Not only that, but “it helps obtain DNA and to analyze spatters patterns. By analyzing the article the reader is able to understand how bluestar works through the rhetorical techniques used.

A Modest Proposal was written in the early 1700’s and about the starving people of Ireland, by Jonathan Swift. Not only were the people who were ruling the country awful, there were people who were starving, and the gap between the rich and the poor was immense. He uses brutal satire and irony to express his irritation with the countries lack there of ideas on how to solve the problems afflicting it. Swift uses rhetorical devices throughout the essay to build support for the solution that the persona he created has stated. Which is the idea of using infants as a primary source of food.

TED is one of the non-profit organizations that does help to share different ideas of different people to the world through their persuasive talk. Sir Ken Robinson, in his Ted Talk, discusses how systems of public education disregard the creativity as it is an important factor related with the growth of students, academically. Robinson does focus on the creativity by arguing through different examples, which does make audience, and other viewers to think on this issue and take action which is being ignored by public education system. The use of pathos, ethos, and logos while his talk regarding creativity in school makes the case of education system entertaining and understand, by giving proper examples with the use of humorous tone.

Persuasion makes it’s way into almost every communication event I can think of. Either I’m trying to persuade someone or they are trying to persuade me. My dad was a connoisseur in the art of rhetoric. I observed him manipulate the english language to his benefit on many occasions.

1729, a Papist infected Ireland was being devoured by the taxes that the British placed on them. The taxes were turning into what once was a glorious place into ruins. Jonathan Swift, an Englishman and Irish sympathizer, realized that someone had to do something to wake up the British. This lead to the creation of A Modest Proposal, a pamphlet heavy with irony and juvenalian satire, which was how Jonathan Swift planned on compelling the British to do something about the poor situation in Ireland. His use of rhetorical devices gets his point across in an effective and powerful way.

Rhetorical Analysis of a TED Talk: Emma Marris: Nature Is Everywhere, We Just Need to Learn to See It Emma Marris address the idea about how people view nature and what they consider to be nature. Marris claims that the problem with how people view nature starts with the general definition of nature. Marris argues that the definition is too strict and limited. She declares that nature is everywhere, but people lack the ability to see it: If nature stayed true to the definition there would be none and there would be a negative effect on the following generations. Emma Marris is an environmental science writer whom earned her master’s degree in science writing at John Hopkins University .
