Citizen Kane (Welles, 1941) challenged traditional narrative and technical elements of classic Hollywood cinema through techniques in cinematography, mise-en-scene and lighting. The mise-en-scene build of Citizen Kane is the pivoting point of the narrative forthcoming and Welles uses every technical element encompassed in this build to span his narrative across 60 years of Charles Foster Kane, the main character 's life. The beginning of this build is founded on the black and white shooting choice which sets an ominous almost 'film noir ' lighting and feel of the opening scene of the castle in Xanadu. This where we see end of Kane 's life, but every aspect of the film 's narrative will revolve around these frames and including the questions of 'who has died '?, 'what was the significance of the snow globe? Props are critical to the scene build. First with the snow globe and the start of the story and then the sled seen as Kane is first taken from his home. Many subsequent scenes also have props that serve to help tell the story. Such is the case for props that provide fodder for expressing anger as Kane 's second wife leaves him and he trashes her room. Almost every prop is destroyed except the snow globe, which Kane holds and reveres as he whispers 'Rosebud '. From the moment the film starts it is clear from the "No Trespassing" sign that the director is taking us somewhere we are not welcome. The close ups of the chain link fence and the iron gates are further evidence of the inaccessibility of the castle in the distance. The images of the emptiness in the gondolas and a decaying golf course suggest that this place was built by someone of wealth. Then we are introduced to a single word “Rosebud” having just tuned into the movie I had no clue what the word means. From there we are thrown into an ocean drowning down memory lane the moment we are introduce to Charles Kane, it’s always from someone else perspective that gives us a distorted view of this man.

The audience identifies more with the characters who portray a more realistic image of the known human environment. The creative storytelling technique employed by Citizen Kane , whereby the biographical film realistically portrays a long time period, and this allows characters to age in the progress of the story. The story is narrated in overlapping segments, as opposed to being a more chronological and linear narrative. “There is more information being added with each narrator contributing his or her part of the story” (Cameron, 2008, p 341).
The play Macbeth by William Shakespeare and 1941 film Citizen Kane possess many similarities in themes and characters, despite the completely different settings and plots. Both main characters are ambitious and determined to achieve a goal, even to a certain point where they lose everything truly meaningful to them. While Macbeth strives to become king of Scotland, Charles Foster Kane attempts to become popular and influential. Both Macbeth and Citizen Kane desire to be powerful members of their respective societies and receive respect and recognition from their acquaintances. When most people feel like they are close to God; they usually make good moral decisions. In Doubt by John Patrick Shanley; Sister Aloysius tells Sister James that “In the pursuit of wrongdoing, one steps away from God. Of course, there’s a price.” When stepping away from God someone is committing sins and they are doing things that are usually not accepted. As the main characters stepped away from God, they had to pay the price of making wrong choices and the price of being pressured by those choices.

Gone with the Wind Analysis While watching the film Gone with the Wind most people would pay little to no attention to details like camera angle or lighting. However, Gone with the Wind is a great example of mise-en-scene ,what is physically being shot in the scene without editing and can include, but is not limited to camera movement, lighting, focus and scenery, in many different ways. Mise-en-scene actually appears during the first scene when Scarlett is sitting on the steps of Tara, her family’s plantation, along with her two of her male companions. Scarlett is sitting on the top stair while the twins are sitting on stairs below hers almost as if they were worshipping her. Scarlett is also looking down upon the twins as if she were superior to them.
