The Civil War was the bloodiest conflict ever on American soil. It was a complete bloodbath. There were 1,100,000 casualties. Also this war was a war fought for important rights that could end slavery.That right there makes this war one of the most important wars in American history. The Civil War had started on April 12, 1861 and it is one of the most important wars fought in American history. The reason the chaos had started to spread was when “Abraham Lincoln won the election in 1860 as the first Republican president on a platform pledging to keep slavery out of the territories, seven states in the deep south seceded and formed a new nation, the Confederate States of America” (Civilwar.org). The war had not yet started but it was inevitable. “Roughly 1,264,000 American soldiers have died in the nation 's wars--620,000 in the Civil War and 644,000 in all other conflicts” (Google). That is nearly half of the American casualties in all American wars fought are from the Civil war. That is unbelievable. “The union had over 350,000 casualties and the Confederates had over 250,000” (Historynet.com). Throughout most of the war the Confederates were winning, but a turning point for the Union was the Battle of Gettysburg. “The turning point of the war. After his successes at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville Lee invaded the North again. After trying to break the Union lines for two days he tries a frontal assault on the entrenched Union forces. “Pickett’s Charge” as this is known fails and Lee retreats back to Virginia.
