Civil War: The Most Important Wars In American History

After 7 states seceded from the Union, war was inevitable. Lincoln made the decision to fight not because of his beliefs about slavery, but because he felt he had the obligation to protect the Union at all costs. The Civil War began when the South attacked Fort Sumter, South Carolina, on April 12, 1861. Lincoln was blamed for the attack with his decision to resupply the fort, which had become an outpost for a hostile nation. The Southern navy then fired the first shot of the war at Fort Sumter.

People usually think of the Battle of Gettysburg or the first shots fired at Fort Sumter, while failing to realize the importance of the lesser known battles which left a considerable impact, the battle of Shiloh included. The Civil War took place between the years 1861 and 1865, it started at Fort Sumter and it ended at the Appomattox Court House. It all began because of one cause, the slaves. Before talking about the cause I might as well explain who were fighting because of it. The Union, it consisted of twenty free slave states and five slave states, because its industrialization no slaves were needed.
