Joseph Campbell once said, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” Many heroes throughout history are just ordinary people who are faced with difficult obstacles in life and through their strength and perseverance succeed. Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and affect others’ lives differently. Without a history full of heroes, our world would not be the same. For the the 2017 Recognition Award, I nominate Clara Barton. Through her works, Clara Barton is a well-known hero for many. Furthermore, Clara was born on December 25, 1821, in Massachusetts. In addition, she is the youngest among six children. Growing up, Clara was very intelligent and supplemented her education with hands-on …show more content…
To add on to her heroic tasks, Clara Barton traveled to Geneva, Switzerland working as a nurse for the International Red Cross. Being an adventurous person, Clara also traveled around various European countries helping people who were sick. After Clara returned back to the United States, she worked hard for ten years to get establish the American Red Cross. Then, in 1880, she became the first president of the American Red Cross; carrying her knowledge and skills into teaching others on how to help aid people in need. Later, in 1904, Clara stepped down from being president at the organization. Even though she was no longer the president of the American Red Cross, Clara still offered her service until she passed away on April 12, 1912. Today, Clara Barton is still considered a hero for all of her service throughout the Civil War and afterwards. Her work is still admired various people and organizations throughout the world. Even though she is not alive today, her life’s work of service is still shown through the American Red Cross and through any organization helping people who are in need during a time of crisis. Because of all Clara Barton’s accomplishments and service, she is one of my heros and I nominate her to
I remeber Alice Magaw and Lavinia Lloyd Dock from the Nursing history books where we used to study. And also I must mention about Clara Barton who was known as the “Angel of the Battlefield” during the Civil War and assigned special duties by President Lincoln. Dorothea Dix who taught poor and neglected children, dedicated her time to social welfare in England, founded the first public mental hospital in America and became the Superintendent of Union Army Nurses and Mary Eliza Mahoney, who was the first African-American professional registered nurse. These figured have contributed alot to the Nursing
When Clara was 56 yrs old, she was granted freedom but required to leave the state. Clara settled in a mining town now called Central City, CO where she worked as a laundress, cook and midwife. With the money she made, she invested in properties and mines nearby. She was known as Aunt Clara because of her emotional and financial support. Brown was a founding member of a Sunday school, made her home available to prayer service and generously supported her community.
their was about 23,000 men that were killed, wounded, or missing.she tryed her best to care for thembut soon relized that she did not have enough supplies to care for the soldiers. So she set up fundraisers so that she could get enough supplies to care for the men in the war. She also helped soliders in the civil war that were missing. Later after returning home to the United States of America she started a new branch of the International Red Cross in 1881 the new branch was called the American Red Cross. She was the first president of the American Red Cross from 1881 to 1900. While she was the president they served in many natural disasters like Johnstown flood in 1889 and the Galveston flood in 1900. Still to day the American Red Cross are the first one there in a natural disasters, the American Red Cross is the longest lasting American relief organization. The Clara Barton Honor Award is the highest award given by the American Red Cross and it is given to the highest volunteer.
(CBBM). Clara Barton is the Founder of The American Red Cross which is an organization that is dedicated to helping those in need throughout the United States. According to Eric Foner, “Clara was 77 and was on the battlefield in Cuba during the Spanish American war . Cuba called her methods into question and shocked everyone in The Red Cross and its local organizations. Barton was unwilling to draw back her ranks of the Red Cross but her inflexibility forced her to resign in 1904.
All she ever wanted to do was help people, and she did not care who the person was or what they had done. Barton started off small by teaching students and establishing her own school. She slowly made her way up, slowly progressing as time went on. She went on to risk her life on the battlefield to save injured soldiers. In the end, she went on to establish the American Red Cross.
A few weeks later, Clara was elected as the leader of this organization. The Red Cross provided relief for victims in awful disasters. The first official project of the Red Cross was to provide funds and clothing to the victims of a forest fire in Michigan. In 1892, Clara and the Red Cross shipped 500 railroad cars of Iowa cornmeal and flour to Russians who were suffering from famine. In her last relief operation in 1900, Clara “distributed over $120,000 in financial assistance and supplies to survivors of the hurricane and tidal wave that struck Galveston, Texas” (“Clara Barton”).
Clara Barton, founder of American Red Cross, fearlessly risks her life to help rescue soldiers on the battlefield, exemplifying attributes of a heroine. She is a hero in many ways. She often put her life through many great dangers. She dealt with deaths of loved ones, unfair rules against women, and the loss of many jobs because of her gender. She saved many soldiers during the American Civil War, impacted the Women’s suffrage movement greatly by passing a case for women’s rights, and founded The American Red cross, which is ]still useful to this day to help many injured or sick people.
I nominate Jane Addams to receive the humanitarian award based on her teaching, environmental justice, community building, and child advocacy. September 1889, she bought a run-down mansion, named Hull-House, in Chicago to house her experimental effort to aid in the solution of social and industrial problems within a city. Hull-house contained many life changing opportunities for men, women, children, and immigrants; including English classes, medical services, and lectures. Addams became a nationally known social critic and a powerful advocate of the poor. Addams also addressed the issues of women’s suffrage, an eight-hour workday, and abolition of child
Harriett Tubman and Florence Nightingale both brought great change is many people’s lives over the course of their life. Harriett Tubman was a slave on a Maryland plantation. No matter what life threw at her, such as being struck in the head by a weight causing severe head trauma, she persevered. She would make up to nineteen trips to the south to deliver slaves to the north and Canada through the Underground Railroad; earning her the nickname Moses the Deliverer. Florence Nightingale was born into wealth, but had always had a fascination with mending things.
Lucy Flucker Knox….. By Annika Heieie Lucy Flucker Knox helped with her own time and resources when ever possible. "I hope you will consider yourself as commander in chief of your own house, but be convinced, that there is such a thing as equal command.” By Lucy Flucker Knox. This quote means that everyone has an equal say.
Helen Keller was an activist, who used her challenges of being deaf, and blind to help others with the same challenges. To help her along the way Helen Keller had a lot of motivations, had activism, and influences. One of her motivations were going to school to become educated. One of her activism was fighting for women’s rights. One of her influences was Anne Sullivan, who taught Helen to talk.
Heroes in our society are revered and respected as Joseph Campbell reminds us: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Heroes exist in all societies and throughout history. Maybe they are not always on the news or from the movies, but their words and their actions never fail to resonate across their feats. A hero gives of himself and dedicates himself to causes which better others and their society unlike individuals who are self serving, greedy, and cruel.
A hero is someone who will give up everything even his or her safety and well being to help others. Irena Sendler was certainly an example of a prominent hero who has influenced many people with her actions. Irena Sendler will be remembered for centuries to come for her selfless
Heroes are people who try to help society by doing or saying something in a beneficial way. Thomas Edison is a hero because he pushes himself to create inventions for our sake, he created inventions that help society during that time period, and some inventions from today could not exist without his inventions, research, or inspirational
