Closing the Education Funding Gap in Illinois
A major public policy issue that has a significant impact on the state of Illinois is education funding. Despite the efforts and progress made towards increasing funding in public schools, low-income and minority students are still receiving less funding than their wealthier peers. Therefore, more work needs to be done to guarantee that these schools are receiving the necessary resources to provide high quality education to their students regardless of their socio-economic background.
Currently, the state 's education funding formula adopted in 2017, aims to close those funding gaps between wealthier districts and underfunded districts, and increase the funding received by schools serving minority students and students of low-income families. In recent years, education funding has been subjected to cuts and budget constraints, some of them due to the pandemic, which destabilized the state’s economy. To address this issue, the state must prioritize education funding and explore ways to increase revenue streams that help alleviate economic crises without cutting education funding.
All in all, the state of Illinois must continue to prioritize education funding, increase education funding, work towards decreasing its reliance on property taxes and work towards a more equitable system. It is imperative that the state recognizes that access to quality education is a fundamental right for all students, regardless of their socio-economic background, and that it is its responsibility to guarantee that all students have the same educational opportunities.
By taking the aforementioned actions or any other under the same line of thought, the state can ensure that every student in Illinois has access to high quality education, which can lead to better academic and economic outcomes in the
For example, “the wealthiest 10 percent of U.S. school districts spend nearly 10 times more than the poorest 10 percent, and spending ratios of 3 to 1 are common within states” (Darling-Hammond). In wealthier, suburban areas, most students have the resources available to benefit their educational needs, including; projectors, computers, and calculators. In contrast, “at MacKenzie High School in Detroit, word processing courses are taught without word processors because the school cannot afford them” (Darling-Hammond). For students coming out of lower income communities, it is more difficult for them to attend college, or excel because of the lack of academic preparation. San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez case. Texas public primary and secondary schools rely on local property taxes for supplemental income. These schools are designed to establish a minimum education threshold at each school. The San Antonio District in the representation of families residing in poor districts challenged this funding scheme by arguing that students were disadvantaged because their schools lacked the property used by other districts, and academic programs receiving government funding should favor all students equally. Having already talked the facts of the San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez, I would like to discuss how this has been another topic of much attention within the Department of Education of different districts.
In some schools spending per student exceeds $10000 per year but the graduation rate is below 50 percent for example in Detroit. Detroit spends about 11100 per year on each student but only 25 percent of their student’s graduate high school. Policymakers should focus on reforming policies and resource allocations to improve student achievement. According to the National Center for Education Statistics 52 percent of public Education expenditures are spent on instruct and this percentage keeps decreasing overtime. Children who benefit from the school choice program usually have higher test scores than their peers.
It seems that governments in the United States are having difficulties meeting the needs of the people with the current resources allotted to them. Government has the task of disturbing revenues to programs that act in the public interest. At times, programs, such as education, are underfunded. Schools then confronted with the challenge of funding beneficial with insufficient revenue and finding alternative methods of funding. More often, we are seeing schools asking students to bare the financial burden in order to participate.
These results should not be surprising. When the goal is to reduce property taxes, there is a good chance politicians will decrease taxes and school funding overall as adding offsetting taxes would seem at cross-purposes with the reduction in property taxes. However, when the goal is to increase equality and help all students succeed, politicians will seek out additional funds to support schools currently near the bottom. At the least, they won’t reduce overall funding in support of equality. Moreover, almost 25 years after reform, Michigan schools are still funded unequally (and won’t be equal for another 20 years at the current rate).

A major issue in American politics today is the issue of school funding and how schools should be funded. In the current funding system for American public schools, nearly half of the funding comes from local property taxes. This causes disparity among schools in wealthier areas compared to poorer areas. The faults in this system has caused a large group of people to fight for equal funding in public schools to allow for fair and equal public schooling. In the article “Unfinished Business: The Legacy of Brown v. Board of Education”, written by William C. Hubbard, he states that “We have to stop tolerating separate and unequal schools in this country today, and we must reenergize public education in America through equitable funding.
Issues in Texas Education Education is a very important topic to me and many other people in this state. The technology in this world has become a great tool for the education system but with technology comes a price. And our government doesn’t seem to realize schools need more money to be able to teach their kids more effectively and keep them involved and entertained in the subjects they are learning. From 2007 to 2016 the overall expenditures of the education system have increased by 18.3 Billion dollars. That is a major increase in funding that the Texas government isn’t noticing that we need more money to fund our local school.
For many African American families education is the ladder for upward mobility. It is seen as the equalizer, the pathway to opportunity. Research have shown that one key contributor to this problem is funding. During the 70’s there was a budget crisis which limits funding’s in New York’s public schools.

School Funding Inequality “One of the most powerful tools for empowering individuals and communities is making certain that any individual who wants to receive a quality education can do so” (Christine Gregoire). Everyone deserves an equal education regardless of where they live or who their parents are. Children are facing the consequences of decisions they can’t make. The current way public schools are being funded is not working effectively, students are suffering and there needs to be a change.
Schools servicing low income students are being shortchanged districts disproportionately distribute funds. According to a report from the U.S. Department of Education, “The analysis of new data on 2008-09 school level expenditures show that many high-poverty schools receive less than their fair share of state and local funding, leaving students in high-poverty schools with fewer resources than schools attended by their wealthier peers.” Providing more resources and a better education for students in wealthier areas not only increases the achievement gap, but it increases the social status gap in America. While the nation acknowledges that inequality is an issue, proper action is not being taken. Until this issue is seriously addressed and action is taken, and poorer schools are provided the necessary tools to succeed, the public school system in America will not have the opportunity to produced skilled
Diane Ravitch, in her book, Reign of Error: The Hoax of the Privatization Movement and the Danger to America’s Public Schools (2013), takes on the privatization movement that has been limiting public school funding and straining the education of students across the nation. She highlights different issues and solutions with each chapter, most of which are issues that we all have faced throughout our lifetimes whether we knew it or not. In chapter twenty-one of her book, “Solutions: Start Here,” she addresses the fact that if poverty and educational equality are issues worth taking on, it must be taken seriously and backed by two intentions: changing society as a whole and improving schools and the educational system at the same time.
