The Future. It’s a dark and unknown figment of the imagination, at least until someone is staring it right in the eye about to take it on head first. Many people go about their future in this way: just jumping in without any solid plan and hoping for the best. I, on the other hand, have been lucky enough to have a somewhat solid grasp on what I want my future to look like. Furthermore, after spending two weeks of my summer at an architecture camp at Ball State University, that grasp has become even stronger. During this time, I learned the importance of determination, ambition, passion, perseverance, and putting faith in other people’s abilities. The only time someone ceases work is when the project is bound by a due date. However, until that point, there’s always a way to improve upon and strengthen any project. This concept is one of the most stressed ideas at the camp; being somewhat of a perfectionist, this isn’t hard for me to work by. While others aren’t working on their projects because they think they’re done or simply don’t want to work any longer, I am changing different aspects of my design and trying to find what works best. This is where determination and ambition come into play; having this level of thoroughness and persistence is only possible for someone who’s determined to succeed, which is why it is easier for me than it is for others. While this camp is taxing and composed of long 12-hour days in studio, I absolutely love spending the two weeks in this environment doing what I enjoy. It helps me realize just how important passion is in the career that I choose. Without the passion I have for this type of work, I wouldn’t enjoy the camp in the way that I do. I would be dreading the next project instead of looking forward to what the next day has in store. The professors put a lot of emphasis on doing what one is passionate about because an individual would not be able to survive the world of architecture without a great amount of passion for it. The passion I have for it is what keeps me in studio working on my project when the majority of people have already left. It’s what makes me want to take every form of constructive criticism the professors give me because it will be beneficial in the long run. It’s what will keep me going when I’m pulling all-nighters to finish a project by the deadline. This camp is merely a glimpse of what my schooling and the rest of my life will be. It’s going to be a long, demanding journey, but the passion I already had and also attained from this camp will make this journey possible and ultimately
