Starting college can be one of the best times in young person’s life. However, it may be one filled with apprehension, angst, and confusion. Adjustment to college life is vital for all students, though the manner and amount of adjustment faced by each undergraduate will fluctuate contingent on a student’s upbringing, life-experience, and former education. Consequently, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning (LGBTQ) community knows this all too well. Therefore, the college counseling center will be offering a series of therapy groups for the incoming freshman that identify as part of the LGBTQ community in order to help them adjust to college life, the separation from home, and the stress of classes. We will have to show the group how to use “I” statements, how to address members with respect, how to give appropriate feedback, and how to maintain appropriate boundaries. It is our task to get the group to talk to each other rather than talking to us or through us. We also need to teach the students how to listen by modeling the way we attend to them. Thus, when participants state specific issues related to the group, my coleader and I will actively get involved to assist each member to solve their conflict such as another member not following guidelines. This will also give us an opportunity to explore why a person is feeling the way they do and bring it to the

In October 12, 2010, Joel Burns made a public message towards the GLBT teens by sharing a personal story. He delivered an amazing message by sharing also those who’ve been victims of being portrayed as gay, bullying, and suicides. Inspiring the young GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender) teens that life does not end by the words of others who have an oppose mentality. Life does get better once you graduate high school, adventure throughout your adult life, finding someone you may last a lifetime, and building a foundation just like those individuals who singled you out for having different interest. “...that the things would get easier, please stick around, society will change, please live long enough to see it…”

We also had to respond to what one has heard by listening to our peers thoughts and appropriately agreeing or disagreeing. These actions all show the class can communicate in a manner that allows one to be both heard and
My initial perception of the members in the room is that some members may be shy to disclose their stories, but was amazed that everyone came forth in the room to discuss their shortcoming. Furthermore, I did not have any stereotypes perception about alcoholism since I am aware that alcoholism is a disease that affects the brain. My understanding about alcoholism was confirmed by the various client verbalization of their stories and problems associated with

However, even if this were an effective way to serve her student, the fact that group counseling has been eliminated as an option still hinders the school counseling program’s effectiveness. When confronting the administration about reinstating group counseling, she risks her job and relationship with other school professionals. This course of action requires tact, data, and facts. By bolstering her student’s self-efficacy to help her disclose her identity to her parents, Mrs. Moon risks her student’s emotional wellbeing if her parents do not accept her. By defying the order of the school and providing group counseling unofficially, she severely risks her job and her reputation as a school
Assessment is absolutely a part of counseling; a comprehensive school counseling program would not be a program without the use of assessments. Assessment is used to assess the client’s problem, defining the identified problem, selecting and implementing treatment, and evaluating counseling. Thus, assessment is used all throughout the counseling process. I think assessment makes the most important more at the starting and ending points of counseling. At the start of the counseling process, assessment is used to determine the problem behaviors of the client, so that counseling can be properly implemented to help elevate the problems.
LGB adolescents become part of a minority group based on the societal view that heterosexuality is favored, leading them to experience heterosexism. Saltzburg found (2007) LGB youth struggle from the society narrative of heterosexism resulting in “fears of disappointing their parents and facing emotional rejection” (p. 58). Narrative therapy is effective with LGB youth and parents by using specific questions and conversations to challenge and discuss heterosexism and homophobia with the parents. One method is to externalize homophobia and heterosexism using conversations such as: 1) identifying and acknowledging in what ways homophobia and heterosexism have come to be constitutive of their life; 2) recognizing how homophobic and heterosexist

Introduction To date I have completed three classes and one group facilitation exam for this semester. It will discuss the definition of group work; how I planned for my group exercise; it will outline my learning as a facilitator and observer for a thirty minute exercise. I will use Bruce Tuckman 's five stage group development model to outline the stages of the group process.
Albert Ellis, an important contributor to the ideas behind cognitive-behavioral therapy and the founder of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), discovered that people’s beliefs strongly affected their emotional functioning. In particular certain irrational beliefs made people feel depressed, anxious or angry and led to self-defeating behaviors. Cognitive behavioral therapy can be thought of as a combination of psychotherapy and behavioral therapy. Psychotherapy emphasizes the importance of the personal meaning we place on things and how thinking patterns begin in childhood. Behavioral therapy pays close attention to the relationship between our problems, our behavior and our thoughts.
