The story of “Cinderella” is used in order to display and teach children and adults a way of living. This fairytale reflects values such as perseverance and determination. She is forced to do housework and is not allowed to take part fun activities or share luxuries with her stepsisters.

As authors and directors gain influence from inspiring sources, they are also gaining influences from the surrounding culture and the time period that they are living in. This may even be subconsciously. New historicism is the theory that explains this and specifically focuses on just how the time period of a work changes and shows how an author's experiences come to life through a work. In Walt Disney’s, Cinderella, the time period glamorizes Cinderella’s journey to happiness while the Grimm Brothers version connects more with reality, teaching that media evolves to what society wants to see.

It is nearly impossible for a tale to be passed down generations and still stay the same. The fairy tale “Cinderella” told by the Grimm brothers is almost 206 years old, and differences can be seen between the modern “Cinderella” story and the original. In “Cinderella,” by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, a young girl named Cinderella is treated like a servant by her family. Luckily she is gifted with beautiful clothing, enabling her to attend a festival, meeting her one true love. Cinderella gets married to the prince, and the step-sisters are punished by getting pecked in the eyes by birds.

Film reviews are a big part of the movie world because that is what people look at to decide whether or not they want to see a movie or not. The film I picked to write about is A Cinderella Story directed by Mark Rosman and written by Leigh Dunlap. This movie made its debut in 2004. The setting of this film is in San Fernando Valley. In this film, there are a lot of people that make up the cast but I will just talk about the main characters.

The Jungle written by Upton Sinclair is a book about the family of Jurgis Rudkus, an immigrant family, moving to America and having to work in meat packing plants in Chicago in the early 1900’s. Cinderella Man directed by Ron Howard is a movie that takes place during the Great Depression in the 1930’s is about a American boxer, James Braddock, that has to survive with little money after getting hurt and not being able to box. Jurgis Rudkus and James Braddock are very similar throughout this book and movie. They go through hard times, but in the end they get what they want and have a much better life.

From its onset with its first feature-length animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, Disney has grown to become a worldwide phenomenon today. But over the years, various parent groups, scholars and film critics have accused Disney for creating shallow, stereotypical princesses whose ultimate aim was to find her 'prince charming ' and live happily ever after. In her article, “What’s Wrong With Cinderella?” in the New York Times, Peggy Orenstein expresses her concern over the effect of princess figures like Cinderella on young girls ' perceptions of themselves and how they should behave (“What’s Wrong With Cinderella?”).

Grimm’s Cinderella is similar and different from Perrault’s Cinderella or (The Little Glass Slipper) because of the moral of kindness, themes, endings. The Grimm version of Cinderella can be compared to the Perrault version because the Grimm’s Cinderella has a darker theme than the Perrault’s version because it has gruesome details. Some gruesome parts in Grimm’s Cinderella is more towards the end of the Grimm fairy tale when the sisters cut off part of their feet. In Grimm’s version the shoe was too small for one the daughters so, “ the mother gave her a knife and said, "Cut the toe off; when thou art Queen thou wilt have no more need to go on foot. " When that did not work the other daughter tried on the shoe and her heel was too large.

She longs for love and affection. She finds it when at the ball, but when she has to leave, she leaves in a hurry and one of the slippers that she is wearing gets left behind at the ball and the Prince finds and starts to look for her. Even though they were separated for short periods of time they still find each other in the end. The Prince takes her to his palace and they get married. This general plot stays the same for all versions of the story, but the differences between Disney’s Cinderella and Grimm’s Cinderella are striking, and they deserve through examination.

Similarly, Disney’s Cinderella presents a cruel and ambitious stepmother who attempts to arrange marriages for her ugly, foolish, and somewhat comical daughters. In the film, we see their miserable attempt to sing opera, (supposedly in order to appear more feminine) as the mother proudly oversees. In one of the last scenes, she desperately urges them to make the glass slipper fit, and while she doesn’t downright tell them to cut off their toes or heels as in the original (Grimm 119), the comic scene in itself seems to have a subtle layer of tragedy. While these examples prove that female ugliness in fairy tales and their adaptations corresponds to wickedness, and the latter is equivalent to ill-temper, the question of female independence still

Cinderella is also portrayed as a young woman suffering silently, without taking any action and waiting for her Prince Charming to rescue her from her horrible life. This is as much a fairy tale convention as it is a gender expectation for women to be beautiful and silent. However, this wasn’t as much as a gender expectation in the 1800s as it is today. Cinderella’s father does not appear to be home as much as the stepmother, and this illustrates the type of work and expectations for women’s and men’s jobs in the 1800s. The father is probably commuting to work, and this is evident through the fact that he never sees the cruelty experienced by Cinderella.

The daughters are referred to as Cinderella’s “false sisters” due to their evil and wicked tactics during the story and also because they are not related to her by blood. Her father gets completely brainwashed by the stepmother and begins to treat his own daughter the same way they do, like a pest.
