Compare And Contrast The First Amendment And Sedition Act Of 1798

The Alien and Sedition Acts were passed in 1798 in preparation for an anticipated war with France. It interpreted the participation of immigrants in the Republican opposition party for evidence between foreigners and disloyalty. As an immigrant I really don’t think it should be so harsh on us foreigners trying to help our government. Since immigrants were trying to get in the republican party, Federalists made harder and tighter restrictions for us immigrants and all the critics also. The Naturalization Act was also passed in 1798 which increased residency on requirement of American citizens.

The Declaration of Independence was a document that freed the colonies from Britain. After the French and Indian War the British put out a new control called the Proclamation Line of 1763. The Proclamation Line of 1763 didn 't allow the colonies from settling west from the Appalachian Mountains. Another act that King George III put into place is called the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act is a law that required that the colonists buy and place tax stamps on many kinds of documents.

The Articles of Confederation created a confederation in the United States. A confederation is a government in which the state government, not national, has dominant power. The leaders of the new nation feared that a strong, centralized government would lead to tyrannical monarchy like the British government. So the Founding Fathers established a confederation where there was no president nor Supreme court, and a Congress with limited power. But the existence of a weak congress led to an ineffective national government.

Thomas Jefferson- one of the great American founding fathers with exquisite taste in architecture and French wine, but also known to hold a controversial set of ideas- fought frequently and strongly against the Federalists ideas before he achieved Presidency. Jefferson and the other republican democrats who followed suit held the belief that the powers of the federal government should be left strictly to what is granted to them in the Constitution. Those powers not specifically addressed in the Constitution would then be delegated to the state governments. This is to ensure that the federal government did not have too much power as they believe a country runs best under a form of self-government.

Meanwhile, America was also divided into two political groups, the Jeffersonian Republicans, and the Federalists. European immigrants often became pro-Jeffersonians because the group was more welcoming than the aristocratic Federalists who discriminated against poor immigrants. The bill of rights and the 14th Amendment is pretty effective in protecting the rights of all citizens. In document 3, Gideon received his right and was appointed an attorney for his court case. Plus, in document 4, Miranda also got his rights in the sense that we was able to get the Supreme Court to hear his case and to explain the importance of the rights of those being questioned in custody. Also, in document 1, it states those rights in the Bill or Rights and the 14th Amendment. Those rights have been placed in a document for others to see and follow.

Upon receiving his copy of the new constitution, Jefferson was upset that there was no presence of a Bill of Rights. This is significant since the Anti-Federalists strongly believed in individual liberties while the Federalists argued that it was not necessary and were strong believers in the power of the central government. It took quite long for a Bill of Rights to be added to the constitution, which protected individual liberties. However, this soon changed when John Adams, a Federalist, signed the Seditions Act, jailing those who spoke badly against the president. The founding fathers were smart men who the world looked up to because of their smart decisions, actions, that directed the U.S. to what it is today. But sadly in today’s society most people either have forgotten the things they did for us, or they just do not care. The founding fathers were great men who led this country to victory in war and on the political front. And often early U.S. history is portrayed as moving smoothly for the colonies turning into the a country of its own , but in reality it was just the opposite. George Washington our first president had problems figuring out ways to control the new nation as it progressed under his leadership.

In the late 1700’s, James Madison wrote the first Ten Amendments that are listed in the United States Constitution. The Bill of Rights were written to ensure American citizens that they have freedoms and rights that the government can 't infringe. Out of the Ten Amendments, I believe that the First and Eighth Amendment are the most significant. The First Amendment grants us freedom of speech, religion, press, petition, and for people to assemble peaceably.

They are both very important documents that have similarities and differences. Some of the main things the Articles of Confederation and the U.S. Constitution have in common is that they addressed the needs of its constituencies.

During the 1790’s Jefferson was known to be in the democratic-republican party where he progresses an ideal structure of equivalencies between money and weight standards with the American/Spanish currency.
