Imagine this. On a Monday morning around 9:30, it was that time of year again: Fitness testing week and it was the day where we took the hardest, most physically painful test, also known as running the mile. The first lap seemed pretty easy to run but towards the end of the second lap, finishing the other two laps seemed impossible, so I just wanted to just walk it from there, when all of a sudden, a rush of energy came over me, allowing me to run a good 10 minute mile. Although I did want to give up and walk the rest of the mile, I pushed through it and managed to jog the whole time, making the reward of finishing sooner feel even better. In the text, Nolan and Clayton state, “‘World…dying…can't last…I saw…the dead places…heart of the system is…rotten…There'll be more…runners…more of them…You can't stop them…can't…We…We were wrong, Francis…death no answer…we must…build, not destroy…tired of killing…wrong…tired…I—I.. ‘" At this point, Francis has come to kill Logan for trying to escape, but had many things to say to him, and as a result of this being his last moment before death, he decided to prove to Francis that the way they live is wrong. Hands reached for him, gentled him aboard, fastened him into the launch seat. A crisp crackle of voices beginning the countdown. And in the final second, as the port closed, Logan saw Ballard giving last-minute instructions to the hard-faced guide who had led them through the minefield.” This shows that hard work can bring great rewards because after finishing that long, hard journey, Logan not only fell in love with Jess/got to be with her, but he also got to live past 21, which was his dream. Because Logan showed hard work and dedication on the way to Sanctuary by overcoming any obstacles in his way, and by surviving all the people that tried to kill him, finding love and achieving his goal was worth it. Also in the text, Clayton and Johnson state, “The rocket was climbing on a golden flame, bound out and away for Darkside. And SANCTUARY.” What Clayton and Johnson mean by this, is that Logan and Jess finally got on the rocket to Sanctuary and were already on their way there, getting to leave the world they came from.
