Satire is used in all types of media. Examples can be seen in books, television shows, and even the comic strips in the morning paper. Most people don’t notice it though, because they don’t have an understanding of what satire is, and what purpose it serves. There are a few different types of satire, and several different techniques used to make it effective. These can be seen throughout the novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, and in the television show Saturday Night Live.
Satire is the use of humor to poke fun at human institutions, in hopes of bringing about change. It brings attention to the issues, so that people will better understand the problem. There are two main types of satire that authors use often: Juvenalian and

The book was written after World War Two; after the atomic bomb was created. The bomb was created by the intellectuals of society, and Golding didn’t agree with them. So he used satire to demonstrate the problems with the war. He pokes fun at the intellect through Piggy. “Piggy is the intellectual with poor eyesight, a weight problem, and asthma” (Character). The boys decide to build a fire so they can be rescued. They start to work, and even “the small boys who had reached the top came sliding too until everyone but Piggy was busy” (Golding, 39). Piggy doesn’t do the work, but he still expects his fair share of everything. Later in the story, the boys need to build a need fire on the beach. It was Piggy’s idea to do so, and he’s extremely proud that he thought of such a thing, because, “Only Piggy could have the intellectual daring to suggest moving the fire from the mountain” (Golding, 109). The intellectuals are the only ones who could’ve possibly created the bomb, and Golding relates this to Piggy being the only one able to come up with an idea to solve the problem. At the end of the book, a Navy officer comes to rescue the boys. When he arrives, the boys are in the process of hunting and killing another boy. The adult officer assumes they’re just playing a game and having fun. In a way, this is an exaggeration. The adult’s naivety is so ridiculous that the reader can easily see the problem with
The boys do not know how they are going to start a fire. All they know is "you can't have no smoke without a fire" (129). They think about what they are going to use then they see Piggy's glasses. All of their fires are started by Piggy's glasses. In the book it seems that right when they have the sun shine through the glasses it catches the wood on fire.
Satire was originally designed to attack vice or folly (Griffin 4). Most of the early work that used satire had a great deal of ridicule and wit in the writing style. This was used to demonstrate the character in a way that was still morally correct. Horace used satirical elements in most of his work to “seeks to laugh men out of their follies” (Griffin 7). This means that the use of satire in many early works was used to criticize an individual until that individual saw the errors in their ways.
One example of satire in “Los Vendidos” by Luis Valdez would be the secretary asking for a Mexican-American. When the secretary first comes in she say “As I was starting to say, I’m a secretary from Governor Reagan’s office, and we’re looking for a Mexican type for the administration,”(p. 1292) but that's not really what she was looking for. What she was looking for was a person who looks, acts, and speaks American but has Mexican blood in them. It’s proven when she had denied the revolucuionario model because it was “made” in Mexico.
Some examples “Don’t forget to thank Satan for the baby Alive he gave you last year”. Even though they used the name Satan it was actually implied to be for Santa. Satire is the use of humor to overly exaggerate the critical purpose and to also mock other’s weaknesses.
The definition of satire is a work that ridicules its subjects through the use of four techniques such as exaggeration, reversal, incongruity, and parody in order to make a comment or criticism about it. The book Cat’s Cradle is a great example of satire being portrayed. In Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle, he creates his own religion “Bokononism” to satirize all of the other religions that are in the world. Bokononism is made from and built on lies (foma).
For example, one way he shows satire is in the beginning of the prompt he says “country was up in arms, the war was on, in every breast burned the holy fire of patriotism”(Twain). Twain is showing how the soldiers were ready for war that even their chest was on fire because of how much patriotism they had. When soldiers go to war I don't think there breast burned them for feeling patriotic. This shows how ironic he is because that didn't really happen. Twain trys to explain to the people how the soilders were so happy to go fight and knew they were going to win
The first fire is built to signal ships for their rescue; it symbolizes hope here. Once the fire is burning brightly, the boys “paused to enjoy the freshness of [the fire]... they flung themselves down in the shadows that lay among the shattered rocks,” (41). The fire comforts the young island inhabitants because it lets them relax with the hope of getting rescued. The boys on the island start to lose hope, even Ralph. Ralph tells Piggy “let the fire go then, for tonight,” (164), showing that he has stopped caring about getting home.
The boys start to turn into savages and care more about playing and killing the pigs than keeping the fire going. The boys created a fire with Piggy’s glasses so that if a boat passes by it can see the smoke. “Look at us! How many are we? And yet we can’t keep a fire going to make smoke.
“Satire is traditionally the powerless against the powerful.” – Molly Ivins. Satire is a style of criticism that can be used in many ways and in many different situations. Occasionally satire is easy to find, other times it may be disguised. Most of the time satire is found in literature.
According to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, satire is a “way of using humor to show that someone or something is foolish, weak, or bad”. Satire shocks its reader into awareness of the situation through the use of sarcasm, blunt and harsh words, and/or exaggeration of the issue. The two types of satire utilize these
Satire is used in literature to criticize and point out society’s flaws. The criticism is usually masked in humour. Irony is commonly used in satires to expose flaws, an effective example is John Smith’s A Modest Proposal, he effectively uses irony, to communicate his argument about the poverty in Ireland at the time. Similarly, in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale she criticizes the society that women live in. Atwood uses allusions to the Old Testament, Cultural Revolution, Salem Witch Trials, and the Taliban to satirize the oppression of women in political, religious and social aspects.
In short the beast represents evil and fear while Piggy’s glasses symbolize cleverness and innovation. Golding connected these symbols to the real world fairly well. For example when something or someone is clever or innovative, people can get greedy just like in the story. Another way how William connected the symbols to the real life world is how everyone is evil inside. The boys in the novel turn evil and savage, while in the real life world people show evil even if it doesn’t seem like it.
Satire often finds its place in literature as a tool to criticize and mock a person or group of people. Satire is most commonly used in the context of politics. Mark Twain’s short story, “Cannibalism in the Cars”, is no exception. Twain’s short story takes various forms of satire and complies them into a comedic onslaught of what he truly thinks of politics and politicians. Twain ridicules American politics and congressional proceedings through the use of the satirical devices reversal, irony, and exaggeration.
Throughout the history author’s created different type of genres of literature because what they wanted to tell or explain differed from one another and needed a different perspective, a different look. One of the most important and known genre of literature is satires. In my paper I am going to focus on answering various questions about satires by using Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal, Judy Brady’s I Want a Wife and a modern day TV-Series that we consider as satire, Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy. We can consider all these 3 different works as satire because all of them have the necessary tools to be considered as satire; irony, ridicule, dark humor, exaggeration and taking their subjects from important social and political issues.
In chapter two, Fire on the Mountain, the boys are attempting to light a fire to signal nearby planes or ships to come rescue them. Ralph, the cheif of the boys, asks, "Does anyone have a match?" And, of course, none of the boys do. Then, one boy has the idea of using Piggy 's glasses to light the fire
