The best way to understand the current practice of nursing is to be aware of its history which provide the evolution of nursing care as well as offer the sine qua non of nursing. With the continued evolution of nurses professional identity nurses have moved away from the feminine role of just merely caring and have moved towards taking on more masculine role which have traditionally been associated with power. As traditionally power is mainly associated with masculinity and caring, which is the core value of nursing, as associated with femininity. From this it can be said that nurses have evolved from being the overshadowed caregivers to now taking on roles that traditionally would not be associated with nursing however still keeping the care element. Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations. Being a nurse is not always as easy and picture perfect as people paint it to be. A nurse is expected to act perfectly professional, even when tears, anger and all-around emotions are begging to come out. A nurse must always be the one that has their life together, especially when others do not. They are there to be the ones to hold and care for others in desperate times of need. Nurses are expected to be more than just a nurse, but rather an advocate, caregiver, support system and professional.

The Theory of Self-Transcendence: History of the Theory The theory of self-transcendence is a middle-range nursing theory which was developed by Pamela Reed (Cramer, 2013; Smith & Liehr, 2008). Self-transcendence theory establishes a framework for healthcare providers through the promotion of well-being during life-altering events (Reed, 2008). In addition, this theory provides a holistic framework for nursing care focused on the relationship between persons and their environment (Reed, 2008). This can be achieved by creating self-transcendence activities that promote improved well-being through a broadening of personal boundaries (Reed, 2003).
Philosophy of Care and Professional Organizations Personal Statement Grand Canyon University: NUR 440 Heather Reed February 5, 2016 Philosophy of Care and Professional Organizations Personal Statement Personal Statement I chose nursing as my occupation because I believe that it is my calling to help others and to care for those in need. In order to conclude if there is a fit between the healthcare field and myself, I must first ensure that there is a fit between my personal values and the organizations. My values include an environment with patient-centered-care, kindness, honesty, leadership, education, evidence-based practice, and quality nursing practice. It is my philosophy that nurses are given the responsibility to deliver safe and universal care that is centered on the needs of the patient.
Particularly, I am grateful and passionate to identify with the needy in the communities at large. I realized that communities living in poverty-stricken areas, health and social injustices deserved assistance. The passion to join the nursing institutions emanated from the inner convictions and the call to serve others. The Regis University in conjunction with the Catholic education values to recognize and uphold the dignity and respect to the people are reflected in the health ethics in which I highly regard (Martin 67).
As a nursing student, I have a grasp on what nursing is through textbooks and lectures. The more I learn about this profession, the more I learn about what my philosophy is. Although I haven’t gained clinical experience as a nurse, I have gained some clinical experience as a nurse assistant that helps me administer patient care while acquiring knowledge working under the supervision of nurses. This experience helps me to become knowledgeable on what their roles and responsibilities are, and it has inspired me that I hope when I graduate, to equal their skill, diligence and passion.
