1. Is there a problem with corn being a major part of grocery store products? Why or why not?
2. Do you agree or disagree that the tagline (Corn. Making the difference in the products we love.) summarizes CORN and why would the Ohio Corn growers choose this tagline?

Many people are going to try to eat as cheaply and/or as conveniently as possible, resulting in less nutritious food choices when foods that contain corn are all the cheapest foods in their category. Not only that, but with corn in everything from frozen dinners to meat and dairy products to salad dressings to vitamins to desserts, consumers may think they are achieving a varied and even reasonably healthy diet, when in reality they are constantly eating corn. This could cause a real problem if the corn crop were ever contaminated with something, or if there really is a problem with GMO corn. There have been claims that high-fructose corn syrup makes people fat, and we certainly have seen a huge increase in the rate of overweight and obesity in the United States since the widespread use of high-fructose corn …show more content…
The bad aspects, of course, are the damage to the rest of our food supply, the possible effects on health, the environmental damage that may cause problems and ultimately increase the price of food down the road (for example, climate change restricting areas where crops will be grown; or spreading dead zones making fish and shellfish less available). The other crops, the fruits and vegetables, are still being grown, but in more limited space and in more limited areas, making them in their turn potentially more vulnerable to difficulties with weather and climate change, and even things like mold or insect threats. There will also be a tendency for their farmers to seek more pesticides and fertilizers and modifications of the plants, be they by hybridizing or genetically modifying, in order to grow more in a more limited space, contributing more of the same sorts of environmental damage. Also, of course, these foods have become relatively more expensive. Choosing the cheaper corn-centered foods also causes consumers to miss out on some excellent nutrition and some great foods that can get overlooked when purchasing processed foods. That list makes me want a turkey dinner even though it 's not Thanksgiving, or perhaps some home-baked chicken and baked potato, some seasonal vegetables, and a berry salad for dessert. Like everyone else, I usually buy the cheap and easy dinners, but looking at that list and imagining all those colorful fruits and vegetables may spur
Should WTRFG Be Taught In 7th Grade I am Brody Hilsendeger. I really enjoyed to book a lot so today I will be explain why the book Were The Red Fern Grows should be taught to 7th graders every year.
Which causes the price of food to increase, but if prices increase it will cause people with low incomes to starve because they would not be able to afford food for themselves or for their family. Most people are worried that it could cause damage to the environment, by growing a lot of corn it can cause damage to the soil. When the soil is damaged it makes it hard for farmers to grow crops. Which will make food
Wegmans grocery stores across the country were hold sweet celebrations this weekend. The family owned grocery chain is celebrating 100 years. The titles of these books are very important on how they correlate with the story and what it means. When Wilson Rawls wrote Where The Red Fern Grows she had to figure out a smart and interesting title that would catch peoples eye and correlate with the story and same thing with Gary Paulsen when he was writing Hatchet. The title of Where The Red Fern Grows is important because the entire book leads up to where they are grown. Hatchet symbolizes that Brian Robeson has a tool that helps him against nature and survive in the woods.
Feeding animals, corn is not healthy for anybody, this process only affects the animal's ability to grow at their own pace. In Northern America, one particular Hispanic family tree, 70% of their family members are affected with both type one and type two diabetes, which can be associated with corn. A Hispanic family member changed the way he ate by becoming vegan. One of his main reasons was to stay healthy which meant cutting corn out of his diet.
How far was it transported, and what did transportation add to the cost? How much did manufacturing or packaging or advertising add to the cost? When the food product has been manufactured or ‘processed’ or ‘precooked,’ how has that affected its quality or price or nutritional value? (Berry) By repeating these questions and statements throughout the article, Berry really makes readers think about things they do not know about their food.
In the essay “Green monster” who do you believe is his intended audience and why? In “The Green Monster,” James McWilliams informs the reader about GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) and the affects it has on animals, plants, farmers and our food. Through multiple illustrations of the affects of GMO, he contends that GMO has various potential consequences, which may in fact be more positive than detrimental to food sustainability. His intended audience seems to be food consumers but more specifically, those uninterested in or wary of products which are genetically modified.
Most people do not realize how many things are made from corn products and Pollan does a great job of breaking down what types of products contain corn. It is obvious that Pollan has a sort of admiration for corn, it’s hardiness, it’s versatility, but at the same time he understands that total dependence on one crop can be dangerous. However, the thesis of the essay is not really corn, but rather the fertilizer we use to grow it, specifically nitrogen right products such as ammonium nitrate. Pollen’s essay is a really interesting look at the history of how nitrogen-based fertilizers came to be so predominant in America and around the world. He discusses both their benefits and incredible dangers, such as the runoff pollution which boosts growth of algae causing the death of ocean life (903).
After watching this video where Michael Moss speaks about Salt, Sugar, and Fat in the American diet, my views about the food industry have changed. I never realized that the government was supporting the dairy industry. It amazed me to learn that the reason Americans are so attached to their dairy products is due to the strong relationship of the government and the dairy industry. Personally, I really enjoy dairy products.
Although high fructose corn syrup may be a contributor to obesity, it is not the main cause. H.F.C.S. may not be the culprit, overeating is one of the most crucial factors of obesity. Most Americans eat portions that are beyond healthy. Studies show that over the last twenty years, food portions in American’s restaurants have doubled or even tripled. This distorted the amount of food people think is healthy for them at home and when eating out.
- Types of foods contains corn are sauces, beef, pork, chicken, frozen entrees, breakfast cereals, breads, cookies, beverages and more. 3.How do Ian and Curt go about planting corn? Are genetically modified foods creating or solving problems? “Genetically modified food” is a term rapidly becoming more frequently debated in conversation today. Discussion with regards to its use or even place in our society is on going, with conflicting arguments always prevalent. Many people believe that genetically modified foods are creating problems within society, while others argue the opposite and believe genetically modified foods are in fact solving problems. Both sides offer sound argument, however by analysing research and genetically modified food history, one can ascertain that genetically modified foods are proffering more solutions to issues in our world rather than creating them.
He continues the rest of the chapter talking about how most foods have traces of corn in them, by following the industrial food chain. All foods by the FDA must have their ingredients posted on the wrapper, so buyers know exactly what they are eating. Michael Pollan knows he has to look at the wrapper and see where all those ingredients are from to really see where the food he is about to came from. 2. Pollan describes American farmers today as “the
We usually don’t recognize the corn, due to companies putting corn in food coloring, flavoring etc. However, in The Omnivore’s Dilemma Todd Dawson says, “We look like corn chips with legs”(22.) This proves we are so clueless on how much corn we
Author of the essay “Eat Food: Food Defined” Michael Pollan, states that everything that pretends to be a food really isn’t a food. Michael persuaded me into agreeing with his argument by talking about how people shouldn’t eat anything their great grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food and avoid food products containing ingredients that are unpronounceable, lists more than five, and contains high fructose corn syrup. He opened my eyes to information I wouldn’t have thought about or researched myself. He got into depth about a type of Sara Lee bread that contains way more ingredients than needed to make the bread, including high fructose corn syrup that isn’t good for you. Marketers are doing this to sell more of their product by making it taste
