Crime In Chicago Case Study

The federal government was overwhelmed with cases, so that bootlegging and speakeasies flourished in every city, and well-organized criminal gangs exploded in numbers, finances, power, and influence on city politics.[1]

“Circumspect Police Ends the Drop in Crime?” This debate topic speaks about police being less proactive, because of vitriol, and causing an increase in crime rates. This debate topic is not directly related to the book, Ghettoside, but falls into the same bracket. The debate talks about the police becoming less involved because of denunciation, and rates of crimes increasing because of that. Ghettoside talks about the black-on-black homicide rates going up, one reason, because of the ignorance of the police.

Gun violence among youths residing on the South side of Chicago is the number one problem facing the city of Chicago. Each year more than 500 people are killed as a result of gun violence among Chicago youths. This problem has caused financial constraints on the city. Chicago city had to spend huge amount of money hiring more police to patrol the affected neighborhood. Many profitable businesses had been forced to close down due to gun violence among youths.

Contrary to the common belief, crime has been on the decline for the past three decades. Yet, news and media have been covering crime more than ever, resulting in the public belief that crime is at an all time high. The sharp drop in crime since the early 1990s has left experts curious to discover the reasons for the decrease in crime. As I compare the article Understanding Why Crime Fell in the 1990s: Four Factors that Explain the Decline and Six that Do Not by Steven D. Levitt and the article Evaluating Contemporary Crime Drop(s) in America, New York City, and Many Other Places by Eric P. Baumer and Kevin T. Wolff, I will briefly describe the articles, compare their agreements and disagreements, as well as discuss my personal preferences.

Police got a call of a possible fight breaking out on the platform of the Fruitvale Station by a crowded train coming from San Francisco. As police started to arrive to the scene two officers had already reprimanded him with his arms behind his back. He was motionless and then one of the officers by the name of Johannes Mehserle who was a 26-year-old white male pulled his pistol from his waist and shot Grant in the lung, which lead to his death later that night (Kirk, Papachristos, Desmond: 864, Additional Cases). The researchers chose this case and the case of Sean Bell because they wanted to see if non-local shootings affected the crime reporting in Milwaukee as well. What was interesting is that in the case of Sean Bell the amount of calls went down like the other three cases.

Chicago has had its ups and downs in the cities violent history, but early 2016 to present has been an exception. Chicago increased in homicides by 59 percent in 2016 and it has only become worse since then with a 29 percent increase in just the first few months of 2017 (Asher, FiveThirtyEight.com; Ford, The Atlantic). It is obvious that something needs to be done, but so far there have not been any major changes made or drastic measures taken in order to improve Chicago’s current state of being. Right now, the three most predominant causes are Chicago’s Police, Chicago’s many gangs, and firearms, hand guns in particular. If the city wants to make any improvements whatsoever then it needs act decisively on gangs and guns, start using different

Introduction Looking at the nightly news, many would believe violent crimes are at an all-time high. There are not just one on one violent crimes or gang violent crimes. There is court shootings, school shootings, church shootings, theater shootings, mall shootings, workplace shootings, and others. Where most one on one crime is committed with illegal guns, mass shootings are done with handguns purchased legally.

On a normal scale, measuring the association between two subjects, one would assume gentrification and school segregation are not related in any sense. In fact, most would argue that school segregation ended in 1954 with the Brown v. Board of Education. This assumption would be incorrect. Deep within the American society lies a new kind of segregation that is neither talked about nor dealt with. Segregation is a result of gentrification—the buying and renovation of houses in deteriorated neighborhoods by upper-income families or individuals—thus, improving property values but often displacing low-income families.

Chicago and other major cities remain in the news, as they continue to struggle with high murder rates. In fact, the city of Chicago has witnessed a 50 percent increase in its murder rate in only a one year period, and this area is not alone. Thankfully, cities across America and noticing violent and property crime rates remain at historic lows. The new adminstration has noted the increase in murder rates, but needs to also consider that other crimes on are the decline, which is always a good thing.

New York in the 1800’s was a land that brought new idea, freedom, and prosperity. It however, did not bring the ideal safety that many of us have today. Over population was a problem in many houses, fires and crime rates ran very high, and jobs did not promise any security. In fact, New York was not a very safe place to live at all.

The U Street Corridor located in Washington D.C., is a unique place full of vibrancy and resilience. Once known for its ability to nurture prominent African Americans, it now houses shops of all kinds, along with trendy restaurants. No longer largely a black community, people from varying races and age groups call it home which can be seen simply by walking the streets. Delores Hayden’s work, The Power of Place helps individuals to understand places like U Street on a deeper level and gain a better understanding of the power a place has to cultivate memories for both the residents and new people moving into the area. Overall, U Street contributes to the understanding of a neighborhood and a city through cultural belonging, place memory, and ?.

For more than four decades Los Angeles has seen an increase in crime, drugs, guns and gangs. It is one of the largest cities in the United States with its population made up of mostly Latinos and African Americans. In the 1980’s LA’s epidemic of crime was due to crack cocaine; therefore, LAPD was very heavy handed in regards to dealing with crime in the 80’s; however, in the 90’s police brutality became rampant due to the massive increase of gangs, guns, drugs and violence, which turned Los Angeles into the murder capital of America. The Rampart Scandal and the Rodney King riot was a very dark period for LAPD in 90’s; for this reason LAPD lost all confidence and trust with their community.
