Criminal Justice System Essay

When a person in the United States commits a crime they will be penalized for that said crime. The United States criminal justice system is the department established by the government to control crime and impose penalties on those who violate the law. The criminal justice system has allowed the government to lock away several people who have committed several crimes and who are a danger to society. With that being said, the criminal justice system also has some flaws. For instance, sometimes wrongfully convicted people get put in jail like in Adnan Syed’s case.

Introduction The topic of this paper is the South Carolina Department of Corrections. This agency was selected due to the authors’ current major of Criminal Justice. While attending classes at Tri-County Technical College I have covered many aspect of the criminal justice system as a whole along with the area of corrections. Although I am familiar with the topic, this will be in depth to the South Carolina Department of Corrections and how this agency interacts within the state government.

Being an archeologist in Aurora also means that I must be familiar with laws and regulations of findings. The law protects Native American skeletons and other purposes, such as artifacts. Legal authorities in federal and state government divisions protect the remains of Native American and artifacts. According to attorney Benderson, Archeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGRPA), are part of an organization that is in control, thus, the state is reliable for state-owned and controlled lands, also to those that are locally owned (USAO Department of Justice 3).

Probation and parole officers have the authority to supervise and report the offenders who are in the probation and parole period. Both officers perform the same duties with different types of individuals. According to Pollock (2010), "They have the authority and power to recommend revocation" (p. 391). The parole officers can make decisions upon any recommandation as they deal with the supervision of individuals who are in their parole period and probation officer supervises individuals who have not been sent to

One way or another a case will eventually land in the hands of the police. Police then can decide to investigate, arrest, or dismiss a case. After the police determine their investigation path they then have to decide if the information they have gathered is going to lead to the arrest of the criminal. Introduction Two males, two rape crimes, yet two completely different types of punishment. Case One: Brock Turner is a 20 years old Caucasian male who was charged with rape of a female who was under the influence of alcohol in California. Case Two: Brian Banks, a black man, was also charged with rape who live in California. He was on the football team and had a full ride scholarship to college when he was charged the time of the crime. These two male have committed the same crimes, at two different time frame, yet one case gets a significantly longer sentence than the other.

The justice system is constant work in progress as the system must change and evolve to meet the needs, demands and requirements of the times we live in. The justice system and its statutes sometimes struggle to keep up with the ever-changing world; thus making them lag behind. As stated, one of the core functions of the justice system is to provide intervention programs for those individuals who are deemed to be at risk. Intervention programs do exist but still the justice system is overburden with many criminal cases. The inability of justice programs to work as they are intended to is seen as one of the significant problems facing the justice system.

Why the Criminal Justice System Is Not Fair The Criminal Justice System is not fair. If you are a man, you are more expected to commit a crime rather than a female. There is a high range of incarceration rates depending on race. Depending on your age, you are worth more money. Should you die as an adult rather than a child, your family would easily receive money in compensation.

There are many subjects in the book “The Essentials of Criminal Justice.” Through the fourteen chapters, the chapter I will be discussing is chapter eleven. Chapter eleven talks about the history of correctional institutions, jails, prisons, and alternate correctional institutions. In this paper, I will be discussing only part of chapter eleven. It will be discussing the history of the correctional Institutions which includes the following: the history of the correctional institutions, the origin of corrections in the United States, the development of prisons, the New York and Pennsylvania systems, and the comparisons of the 19th and 20th century correction systems.

Also, with the criminal justice system there are 3 parts which include police, courts, and corrections. Police are the ones who enforce the law, investigate crimes, and apprehend offenders. Corrections include carrying out sentences imposed by the courts and they also provide safe and humane custody and supervision of offenders. Courts are to conduct fair and impartial trials and they also decide criminal cases.

In the criminal justice system, there are three major components. They are the police, the courts, and the corrections. Each one of the components has a role to play in the system. The police are in charge of arresting and investigating crimes. The courts are charged with the responsibility of punishing offenders while the corrections implement the court rulings.

Can you imagine society without having police officers, correctional system, or courts? There would be constant crime happening all over the world twenty four seven. To incorporate criminal justice among society we are able to set boundaries in order to keep the peace between people. Criminal justice gives us the opportunity to fairly prosecute and punish those who break those boundaries. It also allows criminals to rehabilitate themselves through the correctional system to be able to contribute to society.

Law enforcement is where our police force comes from, it includes the investigation of crimes, assessing situations, helping out the community, integration with kids, drug prevention programs, and making arrest. Maintaining peace, keeping social order and enforcing the law are crucial for a well balance society (Neubauer & Fradella, 2013). The importance of the court system branch is tremendous, it defines what will happen to an individual, how he is penalized, in charge of choosing whether those captured are lawfully liable, and if not to prove how the individual is innocent. According to Neubauer and Fradella (2013) the branch of the court system are directed by delegated judges and staffed with court columnists, court officers and lawyers.

What is the purpose of corrections? Briefly describe different types of correctional supervision. The many facets of the correctional system are all centralized towards one goal that is to carry out the criminal sentence that has been given to the offender. Corrections is defined as any action apply to offenders after they have been convicted and implies that the action is corrective, or meant to change the offenders according to society's needs. It is also stated that corrections have been placed on those individuals that have not been convicted of a crime they have been merely accused.

Police deviance is something that isn’t particularly talked about in the open. The reactions to certain actions by the police are either kept under wraps or blown up in the media to a dramatic extent. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the negative side of police deviance and the repercussions that follow. This will allow some light to be shown on the actions of officers that don’t follow the rules that they set out to uphold. If the peacekeepers aren’t keeping the peace, then the reasoning for having a position of power is null.
