Around the time of three-hundred CE, the amount of power started to decrease for Rome, Italy. Lots of the Roman emperors and people were killed at this dreadful time. But what really caused this sudden downfall? Will we ever really know? I think the three main reasons are: Natural disasters, foreign invasions, and the city’s military problems.
One of the biggest reasons to explain this disaster is the never ending natural disasters. In three-hundred-thirty-six CE, the city of Rome was shook by a deadly and devastating Earthquake. (Doc F). The Earthquake shook the Mediterranean sea along with the land, causing an additional flood. This small but true story was taken from The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, written by Edward Gibbon. (Doc F). Another example of some of these horrendous situations was the spreading of diseases and plagues. These illnesses came from Asia and took the lives of the Romans living along the lines of the Mediterranean sea. (Doc F). This is because

This affected the country very much because they quickly began to be surrounded by people they didn’t know, and were unsure if they were trusted. This included mostly attackers of immigrants. They affected the downfall by spreading diseases, overpopulation, and attacks on some of the Romans. (Doc D and E). In the year three-hundred-eighty CE, the Ostrogoths, Visigoths, and the Vandals started to invade Rome. (Doc C). The people were often contiguous with deadly diseases. One of the most common were the measles. (Doc F). Some of the “immigrants” could have been spies, or even attackers working for other countries/cities. Other invaders killed the Roman emperors and most likely then fled the country. This was because at the time, Rome was far ahead of the other countries. It owned most of them, and was very powerful. This was bad for the city because new people were hurting the Romans, or even killing

13 of the 19 leaders dies due to Assassination or possible assassination. Another reason Rome fell is because Rome grew too large. Rome included so many different lands and people, it started to add even more problems for Rome's economy. When Rome's expansion slowed, other conquered lands and people couldn't be part of the Empire, making them not under Rome's control. When the Emperor tried so solve the problem by raising taxes, normal living citizens couldn't pay for them and became poor. Soon Rome became too big and couldn't pay for itself, so when it couldn't pay for itself, it couldn't control itself.
The fall of Rome was a horrible period for Rome,It lasted almost 2 and a half centuries. It went through many things that at the end played a role in the fall. Like tax fraud and Government issues. During this time period there was a lot of sadness, pain, and evil that happened, and it is hard to remember that this is the world we used to live in. THst there were bad rulers who continued to rule but we had good rulers who got killed.
The upper class of Rome gradually became more selfish and turned away from their jobs that once originally characterized their empire. Cultural decline caused by new commitments of the upper classes and lack of political authority also lead to the downfall of Rome. All these conflicts resulted in a spiral that steadily worsened. Fall of Rome DBQ Including most of the Mediterranean world, Rome, a city that was growing big enough to become one of the world’s largest empire’s would soon slowly fall apart because of their problems. In 27 BC, Rome’s first emperor, Augustus Caesar, took complete power. During his time, he ruled with Pax Romana, a time of Roman peace which lasted for almost 200 years. After his death, the Roman Empire begun to break apart. The primary reasons for the fall of Rome was it being geographically too big; the population was decreasing due to plagues which led to the Roman army becoming weak, social and military issues and laziness of the military would guide the army down which led to cities being lost, and their government and leadership issues of the weak or selfish power leaders would all conduct to the breaking up of Rome.
I agree that Rome was not overthrown by external enemies but was defeated by its own internal problems. The fall of Rome was mainly due to internal problems because the Romans were only fulfilling their own needs, the law were not reliable and the struggle with the right emperor led to the end of Rome. These internal problems made the empire unstable and led to external problems. For example, in document C, Marcellinus, a Roman soldier criticizes the Romans for being selfish and only worrying about themselves.
Between 100 and 600 C.E, the Roman Empire went through a number of political and cultural changes and continuities. Several changes were occurring such as the division and fall of Rome and the rise and spread of Christianity but one thing that continued was the idea of patriarchy and authority in the average Roman family. In the year 100 C.E, most of Europe was in a time of peace and prosperity but after 180 C.E, Rome started to decline due to ineffective leadership and outside invasions, ending the empire’s golden age. Germanic people spread plagues causing a decrease in population and also took the opportunity to attack Rome.
In closing, there are five factors that led to the decline of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. Many different things caused the fall. There is no one answer to why it happened. It is very probable, however that the fall was inevitable. It was going to happen because the society was going to grow out of the republic.
“Why did the Roman Republic fall?” The Roman Republic did not fall simply from one cause, rather many external pressures that brought on political instability and destruction. There were multiple pressures that lead to the downfall of Rome including ambitious generals, changing politics, client armies, and a desolate Senate desperate to remain prominent. Many significant people of the time, who wrote letters and speeches on ancient Rome, help to build detailed recollections of the political warfare that took place between 78-31BC.
Legions started to demand higher pay resulting in raised taxes. Also the desire for goods from outside the empire grew making less economic growth within Rome. As more products were shipped to Rome pirates started to steal more and more items making stores go out of business back on the mainland. High tariffs were placed on imported goods in a desperate attempt to get money flowing back into Rome. Furthermore the lack of new conquests also instigated the decrease of money flow into Rome because they were not stealing gold.
How did an empire so big and powerful fall apart after all of the work and planning that was put into it? The once powerful Roman Empire fell apart for various reasons, such as the over expansion of land and military overspending which led to inadequate man power to cover all of the frontiers and insufficient funds. Also, the corrupt government system of the empire and the instability of its politics for an empire so large, the government was not fit to control
The Fall of the Roman Empire is one of the most memorable setbacks of one of the greatest civilizations to ever exist. Many theories have been said as to the cause of the empire’s fall but, even today, there are still unanswered discussions on what the specific factors were. There are numerous of factors that contributed to the empire’s fall such as the effectiveness of their army, the health of its citizens, the strength of the economy, the capability of the successors, the continuous battle for power, religion and the regulation of their administration. The Fall of Rome was started with the decline in Western Roman Empire where the emperors failed to maintain their rule. The lost of power of the West let alone East was a great threat to the empire but the theme of the decline has been discussed and changed through a much bigger time frame from year 376.
