ernandez versus the state of Texas was one of the first Mexican American civil rights cases heard here by the United States Supreme Court (author, year). This case was one of the most important cases that considered Mexican Americans to be their own racial group in the United States. Pete Hernandez was a Mexican American agricultural worker, who was accused for the murder of Joe Espinosa in Edna, Texas in Jackson County (author, year). Hernandez’s lawyer knew that this was going to be a challenge since Mexican-Americans seemed to be excluded in the jury’s selection in seven counties in Texas. When on trial, Hernandez’s legal team did claim that other Mexican Americans were excluded from the jury commission.
Williamson could not gain assistance from his parents as they passed away. Williamson’s sisters however did acknowledge he needed assistance and their support before and during his trial. Unfortunately, they were left with very limited ways to help him such as convincing police to grant him limited permission to attend the family funeral before the trial. Describe District Attorney Bill Peterson’s legal tactics and motivation in convicting Williamson and
Roberts and Olson try and relate what each group is feeling, thinking, and what drove them to the extremes that were executed. It is hard to tell an author bias because so many different versions of an event were made available to the reader for consideration. It seems, however, there is an overall “tilt” toward Texas and its defenders, though the portrait of Sam Houston was, at times, harsh.

The Ku Klux Klan first emerged in Pulaski, Tennessee following the Civil War. As we know today, the mere mention of the Klan triggers fear as the KKK is known for its various tactics of violence that came in the form if lynchings, murders, and mutilations. Following their emergence, the KKK were quickly symbolized and portrayed as the protectors of the South, following the defeat of the Southern states in the Civil War and the beginning of the period of Reconstruction by the federal government (Gurr, 1989, p. 132). During the 1920s, the KKK achieved its greatest political success and growth outside of the South. During this period, the membership of the Klan heavily expanded to the states of Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Oregon, to which the KKK obtained two to two and one-half million members at its apex.
To win any kind of election/re-election candidates must work to please voters. Here in Texas where a majority of people have a strong pro-death penalty stance, judges must also have a strong stance regarding the death penalty if they would like to remain in office. This is concerning because judges will be more likely to seek he death penalty for the convicted so they can create a record of toughness to win over voters. Some elected judges are sometimes of lesser quality than appointed judges in other states, but since they have a record of toughness everything else is thrown out the window. District attorneys also try to maintain a tough reputation as well.
