• Question 4: How does the case of “John/Joan” (David Reimer) support the view of sex as a category based on nature? How does this case support the view of sex as socially constructed and enforced?
Reading about the case of John/Joan it definitely supports the view of sex as a category of nature. When a child is born they are born as a female or male. When the parents and the doctor decided to do reconstructive surgery they took away David Reimer`s chance to decide who he wanted to be. Raising David as a female (when he was biologically a male) and giving him girl toys to play with and dressing him in skirts and dresses was reinforcing something David knew did not feel right. This supports how the view of sex is socially constructed, because
Summary of Source The editorial discloses the power that the Court adheres to and whether it should be accountable for the decision making of fugitive slaves. The writer had discussed that in no way did the verdict of the Dred Scott case follow an act of law, but was merely “nullity.” During the settlement, they decided that since Dred Scott’s master had brought him on free land in Missouri or of the United States without having a citizenship, which resulted in him having no case. It continues on to say that the jurisdiction of the case was influenced by opinion, which did not involve any legalities.
This morning’s press conference about the new founds dedicated to the Parks and Recreation Department, was held to answer questions about the money and whether or not it was given under false pretenses. The money that was initially given to the Parks and Recreations department was to enforce tighter security in local parks when one of their own employees was injured. Local officials say that early on Saturday morning Jerry Gergich, the employee in question, had sustained multiple injuries including a dislocated shoulder and a black eye, while in a local park feeding the humming bird feeders as part of his job. Mr. Gergich claimed he was mugged by two unknown assailants on Saturday morning when giving his statement to police officers when
The 10 murders that led to Dennis Rader being put away in prison for life began on January 15, 1974. Dennis Rader entered the house of the Otero family and murdered the husband, wife, and two youngest children. He entered the house and according to Philbin (2011) Rader testified in court that, “Well, I confronted the family, pulled the pistol, confronted Mr. Otero and asked him to – you know, that I was there to – basically I wanted the car” (p. 155). Rader told the family that he only wanted the car and some food; trying to convince the family he wouldn’t hurt them, which was not the case.

Perhaps one of the most fascinating yet depressing studies on gender, its fluidity, and how oppressive it can be is the case of David Reimer. In Chapter 3 of "Undoing Gender" by Judith Butler, this situation was studied in detail and psychoanalyzed. When Reimer was extremely young (under a year old), his penis was damaged and had to be removed, so psychiatrist John Money stepped in and told Reimer's parents that they could have sex reassignment surgery, raise David as a girl, and he'd live a normal and happy life. David was thus renamed Brenda and was brought up as female. Around age eight, however, Brenda started exhibiting traditionally masculine behaviors such as wanting to play with trucks and toy guns.
Those two categories have a particular anatomy. If someone doesn’t fit one or the other, then surgeons normalize them. This idea is too simplistic. Sex is more complicated than that. Dreger argues that nature doesn’t draw
This essay argues that the gendered performance of the characters is due to Linda Nicholson’s biological foundationalism as explored in Interpreting Gender (1999). The differences in reactions between the men and women of the story are not
Throughout this paper you will read about these three topics, marriage, general roles, and sexual orientation. Overtime, society values and norms have been evolved. Things through the early 1900s until now have changed. People now at a really young age live with their partner before getting married because some are afraid to take the big step off getting married. For example young teenagers attempt to live with their girlfriend or boyfriend at a young age before marriage.
An incident where pleading insanity worked in one’s favor is heard in the case of Lee Robin. Lee Robin was a 30-year-old doctor who was charged with murder of his wife and his two year old daughter. Robin admitted to killing his wife with an ax and drowning his infant daughter. After the murders, Robin called the police and reported that there was “a problem” at his home. Soon after, the police arrived.
“A sex category is achieved through application of the sex criteria, but in everyday life, categorization is established and sustained by the socially required identificatory displays that proclaim one’s membership
In fact, the sex/gender binary did not always exist, but was constructed by settlers forcing their own views onto the native peoples already formulated perspectives. In the early aboriginal traditions, gender was seen as something to explore. Many native tribes had a wide range of gender classifications, and variations that held different levels of power. An atypical category did not exist. Gender “was not primarily defined by physiology, but rather through the types of work done and other social activities, and there was not always a direct link between ‘biological’ sex, gender, and sexual activity.”
Hannah Fagioli Gender in Our Genes In Lorber’s “Night to His Day”, the main concept is how gender is socially constructed, meaning the components associated with each gender are framed by society from the moment a person is born. These components can be similar or different among men and women and can range from the clothes they wear, to how they talk, to the names they are assigned by parents, to the types of occupations they may pursue in the future, to even the way they walk (Lorber 14). To demonstrate these components surrounding gender, I am going to use examples from the movie, The Seven Year Itch, starring Marilyn Monroe as “the girl” and Tom Ewell as Richard Sherman. An examination of this classic 1955 film will show how ideas about
1); as well as aspects of categorizing concepts with reference to factors in social psychology. For example, the article titled, ‘Prototype Theory: An Alternative Concept Theory for Categorizing Sex and Gender?’ seek to explore the prototype theory to determine whether it captures the fluidity of gender and is able to accommodate transgender and queer identities. The article clearly defined the features of the category labelled ‘woman’ on the basis of sex and gender and applied the prototype theory to these concepts as it relates to the hierarchal levels of categorization. According to Fox (2011), utilizing the prototype theory as a theoretical framework for the concepts of sex and gender provides structural flexibility and inclusiveness (Fox, 2011).
