Over the past few years, we colonists have been getting more and more annoyed with the English King and want to form our own country. Over the last few years, the king of England has treated the colonists very unfairly. The first reason why we should secede is because of the Sugar Act. During this event, we were forced to buy sugar and molasses from England. Then, the king heavily taxed us for buying these goods.

When our founding fathers were writing the constitution for our new nation, they looked at many different sources to gain thoughts on what they should include in the document. Some of the documents that the men looked at included the Magna Carta, Mayflower Compact, and the English Bill of Rights. When the people in America decided that they needed to be able to have freedoms that the king wouldn’t let them have, they decided to break free of Great Britain. The Americans realized that in their new nation they wanted to make an establishment causing the government to have limited power over them because they wanted to be free.

On July 4th 1776 the United States of America declared independence from the empire of Great Britain. The United States wanted to leave the empire for many reasons, but one of the biggest reasons was that they believed the British were treating the colonists unfairly. The British passed many tax laws that impacted the colonists. The colonists had no representatives in Parliament to vote on or discuss these laws. So after the Revolutionary War the United States had to start create their government and how the U.S. would run.

When the colonies declared freedom from Great Britain, they were thought of as a joke, a group of colonies without an army beating the most technologically advanced country in the world. However, the colonies won that war and became the United States of America. After they won their freedom, many countries had a question, How did a little group defeat one of the greatest armies in the world. To understand how this happened, one needs to look at Thomas Paine and his persuasive book “Common Sense”. Thomas Paine, a man known for his political outspokenness, wrote “Common Sense” to give the reasons why the colonies should get independence from Great Britain.

The people of America (colonists) were tired of being controlled by England. They wanted to be free and independent. They believed that they were able to control themselves and be their own country. They wanted England to let go of their control and to view them as independent and their own country.

In the beginning the United States wasn’t what it is today. Instead of having its own government, it was governed by Britain. Although we were colonies of Britain, they left us without any proper government and treated us differently than the people within their country. We attempted many things in order to get our representation, but our plans did not succeed. Originally the colonies did not want to break away from the British.
