Derek Jeter is a baseball player known for playing with the New York Yankees as their shortstop. Derek Jeter also known as Jeter or “The Captain” played with The New York Yankees for 22 years during that time he help the Yankees win several World Series. Jeter has won several awards while playing with the Yankees.
Derek Sanderson Jeter was born on June 26, 1974 in Pequannock, New Jersey. Derek is the eldest of his sister Sharlee Jeter. His parents are Dorothy and Charles Jeter. During this time he also enrolled into the University of Michigan but his time on campus was brief. Batting with a .344 batting average with 50 stolen bases in 1994, Derek Jeter was selected as “Minor League Player of the Year” by several publications, such as The Sporting News and Baseball America. Jeter finally realized that his dream would come true when Yankees shortstop Tony Fernandez was put on the disabled list in 1995. Derek Jeter wearing the #2 on his back made his first big league debut on May 29, 1995 playing against the Seattle Mariners. In 1996 he had his first full season. During his first full season he batted at an average of .314 with 10 home runs. As a skilled shortstop playing for the Yankees he helped the New York Yankees win the 1996 World Series against the Atlanta Braves. During this year Derek Jeter won the 1996 American League Rookie of the Year Award for his excellent performance that season. As his career went on he became one of baseball’s top all-around players. Jeter earned his first 14 All-Star selections in 1998. The season of 1998 ended with the first of three straight world championships for the New York Yankees. The throw to home was over thrown and Huckaby trying to get the ball and beat Jeter to home plate. Huckaby got the ball and his whole game plan was to slide to the plate on his knees and get the out. Derek running with full force knew that he would have to slide to score. Both trying to beat each other’s to the plate Huckaby dove and Derek already slid to the plate. Huckaby landed on top of Jeter at home plate. As each were both yelling Derek Jeter was yelling that his shoulder was hurt and Huckaby was yelling that Derek was off the plate. Huckaby finally paying attention to Derek realized that he was hurt. Huckaby getting off Derek let others get to Jeter because he needed help. Previously, the shortstop players fielded well, but were not expected to have a high batting average, and the few players who had these skills were considered unique, but none of those players had the combination of size, speed and strength of Derek Jeter. Joe was an amazing baseball player during his 13 year career (Kennedy). Joe’s famous hitting streak took place in 1941 (Kennedy). Joe was the 8th born of 9 children ("The Official Site of Joe DiMaggio"). Dimaggio is great not only because of his hitting streak, but he was a nice man (Kennedy). Rose would pass 200 hits during a season for a record of ten time, the first coming in 1965. He would go on to win batting titles in 1968 and 1969. Also, winning a Gold Glove for his outstanding defense in 1969 and 1970. In 1973, Rose won the NL Most Valuable Player award, along with another batting title. Rose featured for the "Big Red Machine" Cincinnati groups that won consecutive World Series titles in 1975 and '76 (Biography.com).
He got to play with one of the best baseball players of all time, Babe Ruth. He has also won many awards also such as MVP (twice), triple crown, and six world series trophies. Mickey was named the “American League HR Leader” in 1955-56,1958, and 1960. He was also named the “American League Runs Scored Leader” from 1954-1961 (“Mickey Mantle”). In his career with the Yankees, he hit 536 homers and was voted the “ American League’s MVP” three times. Mickey was named to 20 all-star teams, and played in 16 of them (Ward 326). He was a 5 time American League Gold Glove winner and a 5 time American League Silver Slugger Award winner. Jeter was a 2 time American League hits leader and had 3 20-home run seasons. Therefore, the transracial ideal embodied by Derek Jeter is not attainable because race has become a defining characteristic through media exploitation and racial framing of minorities, as shown by Barry Bonds and the portrayal of Michael Vick and Ben Roethlisberger cases.
