Most people know about Martin Luther King Jr. and how he fought and died for the rights of African Americans. But how many people know that his name at birth was Michael? Or that he tried to commit suicide at age 12 when his grandmother passed away? How many know that he had a heart of a 60-year old man when he died at age 39, and that MLK Day is also celebrated in Hiroshima, Japan and Toronto, Canada? People knew that he was a preacher, but did they know that he wanted to be a doctor instead? Not many people would know these little-known facts about one of the important persons who have ever lived, but many would probably agree that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s beliefs, words, and actions were so powerful that they changed the laws that affected people of different colors, races, and religion, that helped bring equal treatment for all people and making sure that everyone had the same rights as every anyone else.

King always encouraged the fair treatment of all people no matter what the color of their skin was. Everyone should follow this teaching. Dr. King dreamed that all his children would one day live in a nation where all people would be judged by their character and not by the color of their skin. In my school and community today, there are students and people who are different from one another because they come from different countries and cultures. There are Hispanics, Caucasians, and Asians who come to my school who look very different from each other. They speak with different accents, have different beliefs and values, and different traditions and customs. They have different foods they eat and listen to different kinds of music.
