Americans developed four unique territories in the West. Texas, Oregon, Utah, and California, each for a different reason. Mountain men marked the areas along the Mississippi River. they were employed by trappers. Texas the most popular destination. It was a mostly Spanish colony until it became an independent nation of Mexico. Oregon and the Oregon Trail was the next to be colonized by American settlers. Most of it was controlled by Native American tribes and British fur-trading companies. When beaver population became scarce they slowly withdrew. Their departure left the territory open to settlers. Tension grew between Indians and settlers. Indians felt crowded and many were dying from diseases imported by American settlers. Anger began
