The materials are in form of articles and presentations based on specific topics. The topics I will focus on include unequal pay, termination from work, diminished responsibilities and sexual harassment. Unequal pay: Elizabeth Gammie has written articles and made presentations that touch on this topic. Her article ‘Women of ICAS Reaching the Top: The Demise of the Glass Ceiling’ talks of the way women in the accounting field are discriminated against and a good sign is the way they are denied equal pay as compared to the male counterparts. The unequal pay of women is a pure form of discrimination. A presentation titled ‘In Tech Field, Women Struggle for Equal Pay’ by CBS Chicago supports the claims that women are underpaid in technical professions such as accounting. The fact that women are not treated as equals despite the fact that they work as hard as women is a form of discrimination in …show more content…
These women are given roles up to a certain level and from there they do not get promotions anymore. The ‘glass ceiling’ concept explained in the article describes a conceptual ceiling where women do not advance past a certain position in the firms. They are frustrated to the point that many decide to quit due to the limitation imposed on their personal growth. A presentation by Cindy Gallop on the reasons advertising agencies give to women when they fail to hire them shows that women are undermined in the society. If I didn’t yet perceive that corporate accounting was difficult in myriad ways, the chronicle of Frank Ross’ journey through the halls of the profession, that I look to call my own, has certainly crystallized it for me. His experiences provide a roadmap for the aspirations of this would-be accountant for whom he has helped to pave the way. That he, as a black West Indian immigrant, was able to achieve the level of success that he did in the Americas of the 1960’s and 70’s, presents a different sort of challenge to me, a second-generation West Indian immigrant. My challenge is how to emulate and hopefully achieve some measure of the success that he achieved, with similar courage, grace, and fortitude. And then to give back.
When comparing and contrasting the two different reviews of the book, Getting Even: Why Women Don 't Get Paid Like Men - and What To Do About It, by Evelyn Murphy and E. J. Graff, The Wage and Publishers Weekly take two different approaches. Although both give the specifics of what the book covers, it is at this point that each review takes on a life of their own. In the review of Getting Even, that Amazon.com posted on the website, by Publishers Weekly, the review is very specific in the details of the book and on several accounts of how women are losing money, compared to that of their male counter parts. One of these examples is, “each working woman loses between $700,000 and $2 million because of them--that means less money for bills,
This then introduces the concept of the glass ceiling ( Gay Bryant, Adweek,1984) which deals with the concept that there is an invisible boundary preventing woman from working up the career ladder. Woman too
Tougher laws are needed when it comes to gender pay equity. Men and women should be paid the same amount of money everywhere, at any place if they are doing the same exact job. In 2014, full-time working women in the us were paid 79% less than men doing the exact same job (Catherine Hill). Before 1972, the amount of women that were lawyers, cops, judges etc. was very small. This was because women were not allowed to fulfill these jobs successfully (Martin and Jurik).
This term refers to the gap in pay between men and women in which men, on average, are paid more for the same job as women. This unjust treatment of women can easily be overlooked. It brings up a valuable topic which is worth further discussion. Why are women being treated unfairly? Many efforts are being made to reduce this oppression, but no solutions have been attained.

Gender pay gap is becoming more important subject of various discussions. One of the major fighters in this gender based problem are feminists. They claim that an unequal payment is a consequence
Gender equality: the pinnacle concept that American society is not-so desperately trying to achieve. Many Americans have convinced themselves that gender equality was remedied by the Nineteenth Amendment and the Second Feminist Movement, and have not considered the thousands of steps that are left on the journey. In recent years, a matter of public interest has been the gender wage gap, stating that women are earning significantly less money than men for doing an equivalent amount of work. Critics of the effort to “break the glass ceiling” claim that a pay gap does not exist, and that if it does, it is because women either do not work as hard, have to tend to their families, or hold lower paying jobs. However, the gender pay gap has been proven to exist in a variety of different forms,
They now have the necessary qualifications and skills to lead countries and fortune five hundred companies. Despite the opportunities being there and affirmative action efforts women still seem to find it harder than their male counterparts to beyond to the executive positions in the workplace. It seem like there is a glass ceiling, where women basically see the top, the opportunities are there and as mentioned before there are policies in place but women cannot break through this glass ceiling. Men are often at times promoted or given higher positions than female employees based on their gender, even though these women are better qualified or experienced than their male counterparts and Any of jobs or positions in the workplace especially positions of higher authority have always been reserved for men. Men are given preference over more than women when it comes to promotions as women are seen as inferior, subjective, less capacity and weaker than their male counterparts, especially in certain in certain industries such as the engineering and construction industries which are male dominated and are seen as no place for a women. ”
The unrealistic expectations of external users of financial statements to assume that an auditor remains totally impartial to client influence is a conclusion drawn from psychological research. The legal system forms the opposite view and has determined that external users should be able to rely implicitly on an auditor’s determination. Accounting standards have set expectations of auditor independence and neutrality. (Max H. Bazerman, 1997) The entire concept of professional scepticism and its application is the true and fair representation of financial statements to the users of these
Since the establishment of the roles of society, women have been entitled to feminine roles that focus on family and nurturing. This roles allows for the subordination of women in the workplace since it makes distinctions between ideological constraints between genders. This opens up for the construction of gendered processes, that focus on the placement of roles that only “women” are allowed to acquire because of their practices. The author makes the example of how the managers contribute to gender gap and placement of roles that do not allow for the advancement of women in an organization. Acker argued, “…the production of gender divisions.
My interest in Accounting stemmed from my optimistic expectation about career development in this field. Accounting is so important in the business world that only on the basis of accounting information, management is able to make investment decisions, and optimize internal operation. Thus, it is widely applied to every business sector. However, due to a strange combination of circumstances, I was matriculated by Biology and Medical Engineering College, instead of the Economic and Management College, in which I could accumulate the knowledge that would allow me to realize my career ambition. Changing major was not easy to operate in our university.
