King overcame a childhood that would set the stage for the rest of his life. Martin Luther King Jr. grew up in Atlanta, Georgia under the care of his parents Martin Luther King Sr. and Alberta Williams. At the age of six, King befriended a young boy about the same age as him whose father owned a shop across the street from Luther’s home. Once they both entered school, his friend told him that his father said that they could no longer be friends. “…one day that his father had demanded that he would play with me no more. I never will forget what a great shock this was to me.” (Page 7). This hit King hard as it was his first experience with discrimination. It was a shocking awakening for him as a child.
