I also gained practical skills in conducting research, analyzing data, and writing reports. I participated in several extracurricular activities that enhanced my interpersonal and communication skills, such as volunteering at a local mental health center, joining the peer counseling club, and attending workshops and seminars on various topics related to mental
Professional Identity and Careers Paper Professional identity is prominent topic for licensed professional counselors and is a priority for many counseling organizations as they look to the future of the counseling profession (Kaplan & Gladding, 2011). How could diversity in the United States potentially lead to collapse? There are many elements that contribute to collapse. Whether it’s on a larger scale, like a country, or on a smaller scale, like a family. There is an infinite amount. But the most important one, is diversity.

Cultural Competence, Diversity and Practice When the topic of cultural diversity is discussed, this includes factors such as a client’s age, gender, sexual preference, spiritual beliefs, socioeconomic status, geographic location, physical and mental capacities (Davis, McPhail, Wiest, & Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, 1995). To me, the idea of cultural competency is not a skill one simply learns and then adds to his or her tool kit; it is an ongoing process. This involves not only staff development, but self-assessment as well. Cultural competence involves considering minority viewpoints and expanding one’s own perceptions and worldview, the truth is that all counselors have cultural blind spots (Davis, et al., 1995). I also believe the
Office of Diversity and Inclusion’s Morrill Scholarship Program: Diversity is dynamic and inclusive; a destination and a pathway we travel to model 21st century global citizenship. Diversity matters because the exchange of ideas matter and because no one person or group has all the answers; it helps us to know ourselves in all our multiple dimensions and know each other better. How has the neighborhood you grew up in, the school(s) you attended, and/or your family background shaped your personal and/or educational experiences? How might these personal and/or educational experiences enable you to contribute something unique to The Ohio State University? Note: Don’t forget to provide examples.
As a woman of color, I believe it is essential that I become aware of my own biases in order to help individuals that have different beliefs, values, and cultural practices. When I was done completing the “Multicultural Counseling Competencies: A Self Examination” assessment, I became aware of my strengths, weaknesses, and areas where I need to grow as a future college counselor. To begin with, I notice that I questioned myself continuously whether I take the time to evaluate the limits of my competency when helping a student from a different cultural heritage from mine.
American Counseling Association: Membership While becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), it is important to follow the American Counseling Association’s (ACA, 2014) Code of Ethics when treating clients, making ethical decisions, and adhering to the professional standards set forth within the Code of Ethics (Remley & Herlihy, 2016). The first is fostering appropriate counseling practices for people with diverse backgrounds and upbringings. Our local community has shown significant growth in recent years, and I believe utilizing proper counseling skills with a diverse clientele is crucial. Furthermore, I recognize the importance of intersectionality within the counseling profession, as individuals deserve to receive specific and personalized care. Correspondingly, I would appreciate the opportunity to work with Dr. Kenneth M. Coll and his devotion to counseling practices with youth populations who experience limited access to mental health resources due to economic disparities, rural isolation, etc. I am also interested in studying counseling practices regarding addiction prevention, treatment, and recovery.
My educational goal to pursue a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a specialization in Trauma and Crisis Counseling is a result of my personal life experiences and my admiration for those who work in this field, dedicated to helping those who may feel dragged down by toxic cycles and heavy memories, like myself once did, to create a life filled with meaning. As a Sociology major in my undergraduate career, I’ve always been interested in other people and why they operate the way that they do. It wasn’t long after earning my bachelors that I came to the belief that my past experiences and mental health journey could become my superpower to help others, and that if I wish for society to collectively feel better, then the focus on
I grew up in sunny California, within bustling cities, warm weather, and a fast-paced lifestyle. It was all I knew until the big move to Virginia. Once I reach the new town I was going to call home, I experience a drastic change in lifestyle and culture. The two areas couldn't be any different. They had a diverse mix of people, a distinctive blend of cultures, and a unique lifestyle.

Like other professions in the mental health field and helping professions, counseling typically attracts those who are imbued with a need to help others, to make a difference in others’ lives, the community around them and sometimes even the world.
