Mr. Utterson is representative of Victorian moral/social code due to his typical appearance and lifestyle choices. In the Victorian era, men were expected to be a “self made man” who worked hard in his home or business, acted gentleman-like, and was well established. The novel describes Mr. Utterson as “a man of rugged countenance that was never lighted by a smile” but was somehow lovable (1677). Dr. Jekyll also feel into this strict social code. Being close friends with Mr. Utterson, Dr. Jekyll was also well respected in society.
