On writing by Stephen King In the first half of Steven kings book, “On writing,” he told about his childhood on to adult hood. Later in the book, he gave instructions on writing. King was inspired to write this book from another writer, Amy Tan. He asked her what question she was not asked by her audience at her writer talks. She answered, “No-one asks me about the language “(King, 1st forward). In the book, King told of his dysfunctional childhood and being raised by his mother and his aunt with lots of babysitters (King, 17). He said he was two and a half the first time he imagined being someone else (King, 18). When he became older he copied stories out of comic books, and when Stephen showed his mother the stories, she suggested …show more content…
I think King decided to put that quote in his book because fiction is a lie. Fiction is not true. It is a made-up story, and I believe Kings Intention was to say, “If you are a really good liar and a good writer, you will prosper.” In his book, Stephen indicated that his ideas on what to write came out of thin air, and the important thing is to recognize the right ideas when you see them (King, 37). I can relate to this, and I have found that if I am writing on a daily basis ideas come into my head no matter what I am doing. I think it could be called, “The writer’s mindset”. King suggests in his writing instructions, “I think you begin by interpreting “Write what you know” as broadly and inclusively as possible” (King, 158). King also said that if you just write as you know, it may be difficult to write about spaceships (King, 158). I can relate to that because it is more difficult to write fiction than non-fiction because sometimes you have to write about what you don’t know. King suggests that people write about the subjects that they enjoy reading, and to blend their knowledge with in it (King, 161). He emphasizes that the most important part of writing is to master the fundamentals of grammar, and to read a lot and write a lot (King,
Before Tabitha writes about Stephen's life as an author or English teacher she mentions that Stephen attended a grammar school. This is possibly how and where Stephen learned how to write. Zinsser through his passage explains how to declutter your writing by avoiding and deleting unnecessary details. King and Zinsser both focus on writing and targets the same audience, aspiring writers, but both authors approach the subject differently.
This quotes comes from the end of chapter. For this chapter, Gladwell examines the life of one specific student at KIPP, named Marita. She is a middle schooler who wakes up at 5:30 AM and doesn’t get home from school until 5pm. She then starts her homework, and rarely takes a break, often eating her dinner as she works instead of sitting down at the table with her family.
‘I started out jotting things down about my childhood, because I felt them slipping away...’ (Tobias Wolff on his motive in writing his memoir This Boy’s Life) A book that I would recommend reading would be Tobias Wolff ’s This Boy’s Life.

Tobias Wolff’s memoir This Boys Life, charts the young boys trials and adulations, growing up in the turbulent post war 1950s america with a warm hearted but ineffectual mother and a long string of violent and dangerous partners. Poverty and violence in his life rob Toby of his childhood innocence forcing him to hide in his own imagination to shield himself from harm. At the tender age of ten Toby witnesses a major “crash”. Standing “at the cliffs edge” Toby does not realise how much of an ominous sign this is for his life.
They would rather procrastinate than to put in the time to begin working on their writing projects. Many writers tend to overthink every little detail. Other people tend to let inspiration guide them into a paragraph or even a whole story. However, many authors argue that inspiration will only come if you push yourself to keep putting pen to paper each day. Several writers have their own way of dealing with a writer’s block.
After reading the first chapter, writing with Style, from “Thinking Well”, by John R. Trimble, he made it seem as if he was writing about my writing when he explained a novice writer. Trimble explains how a novice writer would write by giving examples of how their style of writing looks like. For example, Trimble explains how new writers unconsciously write and how they are not aware of their egocentrism. He states what a novice would have to achieve objectivity, empathy, courtesy and social sensitivity in order for him to have a readable style. Trimble then discusses what makes a veteran writer and how their thinking process reflects their writing situation.
One the reasons is he had a widowed mother with no money. To just barely make ends meet, Ms. King relied on the donations of almost every one of her family members. Another reason is King was a sickly child growing up, and stayed home quite often. In fact, King “stayed out of school of school for
Thomas King effectively uses stories, as well as devises such as comparison, biases and personal aspects to support his thesis. King introduces two stories that have shaped him. The first is about his mother, she works to support her family, in a time when women would stay in the home. He learned about what must be accepted. “She understands the world as a good place, where good deeds should beget rewards.
Next, King uses repetition. The phrase, “I have a dream” is an example. The significance behind this is that even if black people have been segregated and silenced for so so long, they are still people with dreams. He reiterates this because he wants them to remember that they are allowed to dream of
In fact, it was a boy. ”(pg.105) This evidence supports that he repeatedly provides background info that helps the reader furthermore understand the story. Moreover, The author showed a flashback in all of chapter 10 (so I cited the last sentence)“...and that is where the story began.
Growing up over the years I have thought of writing to be a very limited field. Limiting writing to only published books, magazines and writing my essays for school, but over the course of the last couple weeks I have learned otherwise. Having read the texts that were assigned in class and discussed them as a group, has really allowed me to see that there are more parts to writing than the actual task of writing and allowed me to form my own ideas of good writing. Although some people believe that grammar and spelling makes good writing, in actuality good writing is created through understanding the context, connecting with the audience and realizing the genre you are writing in.
