When Lina had to draw a man from a photograph, she felt that her “skin prickled at the sight of [the commander]” when he was standing over her (Sepetys 174). This allows us to feel how Lina felt while having to draw for the NVKD.

Of Roses and Thorns A rose may look harmless from far away, but no one seems to remember that it has harmful thorns. In Shirley Jackson’s The Possibility of Evil, Adela Strangeworth appears like a normal old lady at first; however, under all her kind words are malevolence. She anonymously writes ghastly letters to the people in her neighborhood, and watches them suffer as entertainment. Furthermore, she believes that she is getting rid of the evil in her neighborhood; yet in reality, she is the one causing it. Undoubtedly, Adela Strangeworth is a vicious, arrogant and manipulative individual who is able to deceive her entire community, so that she can change it into her perfect world.

She showed her true level of courage the night she left knowing her grandmother was trying to buy her and her children. After she left her grandmothers she knew she needed to continue without the help of others because she would put herself and her family at great risk. The fact that she left on her own with little to no help from others shows that she had great courage to get what she deserved as a person that was educated and had the ability to work. Along with her gaining and showing a high level of courage, she showed that she was not going to let her fear to control her.

Change. What causes it? People change when they realize who they are and who they want to be. They change because of the people around them, how they react to a situation at hand, and to become who they want to be. People change based on the people around them, they may adapt and become them or they may realize that’s not them and become the opposite.

Cathy Ames has been criticized because she is completely evil. It has expressed throughout the novel that Cathy is inhuman. She has no emotion, no feelings, and no good in her. Many state that she is a symbol for Satan or a witch, who is pawn of Satan. People go so far in declaring that she is one of these evil spirits because even from birth she was filled with extreme evil and darkness, lacking characteristic that make up a human.

Oppression is often portrayed in a negative light. Those who fight oppression are frequently regarded as heroes. The opposite is true for Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s book, V for Vendetta. V for Vendetta totes a mysterious character who goes by the alias of V. V is a villain who will stop at nothing to achieve his end goal: freeing England from the Norsefire regime. Many would see V as a hero due to the fact that he is trying to free a country and its civilians from an oppressive government.

In the book “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, it’s about a little girl who is pressured by her mother to become something she doesn’t want to be. Jing- mei , the daughter, is forced to become a prodigy(child actress), by her mother, and she doesn’t want to be one. In the story, Jing- meis’ mother uses allusions such as Shirley Temple to push her into becoming a prodigy. Although at first Jing- mei is excited to become a prodigy, she later realizes its something she just doesn’t enjoy doing. Consequently, the uses of allusion in the story help Jing- mei discover to not be a prodigy and that what her mother wants for her is not always important.

Have you ever found yourself rooting for the little man? If so, you will more than likely identify with the theme of George Orwell’s book 1984. The main characters, Winston and Julia, in 1984, rebelled against the parties control, over their daily life’s. Winston and Julia conspire to lash out against the Party’s oppression, and they carry out a love affair, which was strictly forbidden by Big Brother. Character was really emphasized as a literary element throughout the book.
