Abigail Williams:
Abigail only cares about herself. She is selfish and cold; she manipulates her friends and the people close to her. All of her actions are for her own well-being. Abigail manipulates people even though others lives are in danger. All of the hangings that occurred in Salem were her fault. Abigail acted as if she was getting possessed: “She is cold, your honor, touch her” (1148). She falsely accused people so that she could get revenge on Elizabeth and John Proctor. Abigail wanted to see them both hanged because of her jealousy. She wanted to be with Proctor. If she couldn’t be with him, then no one could. He does what is just even though it can have a negatively affect on him. Proctor revealed his sins to the court in order to get innocent people out of trouble: “I have made a bell of my honor! I have rung the bell of my good name” (1148). He did this knowing that his own name was at stake. Proctor wants justice. He stained his name so that Abigail was truthfully tried. He wanted Abigail to take responsibility of her actions. But, John was mostly concerned because of his wife. Elizabeth Proctor was innocent and Proctor wanted to prove this. Proctor repeatedly tries to reveal the truth about the witch trials but everybody mistrusts him. He wants to relieve everyone from their blindness: “I see his filthy face! And it is my face, and yours, Danforth! For them that quail to bring men out of ignorance, as I have quailed, and as you quail now when you know in all your black hearts that this be fraud” (1152). Truth. That’s what Proctor is ultimately trying to achieve. But, no one can see eye to eye with him. No one is able to see his point of view. The judges are blinded by their faith and they don’t care about Proctor’s logical statements. This makes Proctor vulnerable. He is susceptible to being wrongfully tried. Nevertheless, Proctor is a strong man that is willing to dishonor his name for
