Biography of Emily Dickinson There are numerous poets in the world, but not every poet has written almost 1,800 poems. Emily Dickinson was a very distinct poet during the mid-late 1800’s and influenced much of the poetry in the modern era. Even though her life was short lived and she stayed secluded in her hometown, Emily Dickinson lived a full life through her natural art form of poetry. She constantly wrote outstanding poems that usually dealt with death and immortality. Emily Dickinson’s life can be outlined by analyzing her early life, Adulthood, after death, and the historical context of I Felt a Funeral in my Brain. Emily Dickinson was born into a prominent middle class family on December 10th, 1830 in Amherst Massachusetts. Emily was the middle child and was born to Edward and Emily Norcross Dickinson. Emily’s older brother was named Austin and her younger sister was named Lavinia. Emily studied at Amherst Academy (K-8) for seven years. Emily never received any awards, because most of her works were published after she passed away. Livinia (Emily’s younger sister) found many of Emily’s poems and published them, but a lot of the poems were changed to meet “19th-century grammar standards”. The changes were in capitalization, punctuation, and slant rhyme, because Emily’s unique style was filled with a lot of randomness in those components of her writings. Only about 11 of Emily’s poems were published during her lifetime, all of the other ones were published after she died. Her sister burned many of the poems, because that is what Emily Dickinson wanted. Some of Emily’s most famous writings include: “I taste a liquor never brewed”, Success is counted sweetest”, “Wild nights-Wild nights”, and of course “I felt a Funeral in my
