When examining “Crash” and “7 Seconds in the Bronx” we observe the injustice the injustice individuals face resulting in unforgivable offenses. When examining both stories it becomes apparent that between stereotypes, authoritative discrimination, and economic hierarchy, it is tough to be of a minority background. Stereotypes are an unfair representation that has been developed about a person or a race. In “Crash” we see the struggle of being a minority. Common forms of segregation of the black community were actions such as having them sit at the back of public buses and designating different drinking fountains as seen in my visual piece. Another quote stated within the court “A white man had been killed during a robbery, and though two of the robbers had been killed on the spot, one had been captured, and he, too, would have to die.” the use of adjectives in this shows the balance of power between the two races and implies that if they robber had been white he would have been convicted differently. The use of the image portraying slavery emphasizes the injustice and little power the black community struggled with. The Barbeque (1993), directed by Winston Washington Moxam, is a black and white drama film that focuses on a young black woman’s encounter with her ex-boyfriend’s white family. It is a compelling film about racism and it delivers a poignant critique of the everyday racism that pervades Canadian society, as well as depicting the challenges that people of color go through every day. “The Barbeque is an intricate deconstruction of the passive-aggressive forms of racism that a young black woman has to face at her white boyfriend's family gathering” (Araneda, 101). How does Moxam, through a clever and incisive satire, exposes the different forms that racism takes as well as different ways in which people of color are subjected to everyday racism?

When the author instills these emotions into the readers, they may also realize one very important aspect: they too have felt this way and been in a similar situation. This only serves to further reinforce Staples’ message that stereotyping has become a horrible plague not only to him but to society as a whole. Additionally, the rich portrayal of the emotions felt by the pedestrians shows that Staples has a profound understanding of how others feel in his presence. This shows a clarity in Staples’ thinking and will allow readers to trust that the author has done heavy thinking and analyzing, thus helping his credibility. Staples’ meticulously worded imagery throughout his essay successfully conveys tense, skeptical, and even fearsome emotions in his readers.

The Blind Side is explored and defined through several different messages. The film Girl’s Trip has been applauded for being a celebration of blackness in the primarily white film industry. The majority of the cast and the writers for Girl’s Trip are people of color. The film was much more successful than its “white counterpart” Rough Night in box office revenue and reviews. However, most of the black characters in Girl’s Trip shift through various controlling images throughout the movie. The reason these stereotypes are less obvious than they are in some other films is because each characters portrays multiple stereotypes and different times throughout the film.

Moreover, demonstrate consequences are taken to oppress racial and ethnic minorities to keep them in a subservient position. Overall, this film has provided me with a visual depiction of how stereotypes are a mental tool that enforces racial segregation and self-hate. The label of “White” became a necessity for Sarah Jane to achieve in society. To attain it she needed to move to a new city, change her name and deny her mother.

Black women are treated less than because of their ascribed traits, their gender and race, and are often dehumanized and belittled throughout the movie. They are treated like slaves and are seen as easily disposable. There are several moments throughout the film that show the racial, gender, and class inequalities. These moments also show exploitation and opportunity hoarding. The Help also explains historical context of the inequality that occurred during that time period.

In the film, an example of discrimination is when a black waitress at a restaurant does not serve two black guys. She instead chooses to serve only the white people in the restaurant. These three theories will be further discussed in detail in this movie analysis. Firstly, racism is portrayed strongly in the movie. Racism occurs due to stereotypes related to racial issues. Stereotyping is the process “involving the expression of an exaggerated belief about a group that serves to qualify or justify the conduct towards that group of those who hold and express that belief” (Long, Wall 107).

The discrimination against the white race begins with a gradual distinct treatment of the African Americans who appear to have a trace of the white race. Helene proves to have a more formal dialect as she asks for “the bathroom” (23) and the black woman cannot understand until Helene finally refers to it as “the toilet” (23). The difference in word choice distinct Helene from the African Americans in the Bottom. The fact that Helene also has fairer skin than the African Americans gives the black woman a reason to believe Helene has a trace of white. Therefore, when Helene approaches the black woman on the train, “[the woman fastens her eyes]…on the thick velvet, the fair skin, [and] the high tone voice” (23), as if surprised and shocked to see an African American women appear in such a manner.
