Because of this there is heavy fines jail time and horrible consequences for the use of anabolic or any type of steroid. Evan just for carrying the drug you can receive a maximum offense of one year in jail and a one thousand dollar fine for the first offense. The maximum penalty for a first time use of steroids is five years in prison and a two hundred and fifty thousand dollar fine. Although that sounds like a lot the maximum amount for this crime is 10 years in prison and a half a million dollars, that’s double the amount from your first time. Steroids are considered such a dangerous drug that these penalties are huge and states Even have their own laws added on to federal laws for the use of anabolic steroids. In the MLB A player's first positive test for steroids results in an automatic 50-game suspension without pay. A second positive test results in a 100-game suspension without pay. A third positive test results in a lifetime ban from the sport all together.in the NFL 12,000 tests are conducted during the season, including 10 randomly selected players from each team in every week of the season for the use of anabolic steroids. Also in the NFL a player's first positive test results in a 4-game unpaid suspension (players lose both their salary and a portion of their signing bonus). A second positive test results in an 8-game suspension without pay. A third positive test results in a 12-month unpaid suspension and after your fifth use you are banned from the sport for life. Using performance enhancing drugs in sports is horrible for you and heavily penalized but people still tend to think it will make them better but in the end will ruin them in many ways which is why it became illegal in the first place. (Conclusion
If athletes take steroids then your team and yourself can be eliminated from the event if caught taking steroids because it gives unfairness to other players and teams. Many teams and players have bein eliminated from special sports events such as Russia, Usa and Many more teams have been banned from the olympics, also many players like a canadian runner named johnsen ran 100m in 9.79 seconds but later striped from his gold medal after testing positive after and anabolic test. Another scenario is when one russian swimmer was tested positive after an anabolic test and his whole team of 100 swimmers were also banned from the summer olympics of 2016. One player can affect a whole team because that is punishments for taking steroids to improve your game. Manny athletes hate versing athletes that dope in sports that 's why there is punishments for doping in
These fines are issued for punishments and part of them to contribute the steroids policy. The fines would only work for the first offense. The MLB decides if the player should get a 10-day suspension without pay or that player should be fined $10,000 (Bodley, 2005). One of the best things of this policy is that the time is convenient. As I mentioned before every player is tested every year, and they can have the results during the season.
Steroids can cause many health issues, “including “steroid rage,” the development of male characteristics in female athletes, heart attacks, and greatly reduced life expectancy (The Database Book. 2009).” Steroids could also ban you from playing ever again. The first time a player is tested positive they are put on an eighty game suspension, second positive test will put the player on a 162 game suspension, which is the whole season including postseason, and a third positive test will ban the player from Major League Baseball for life. Steroids also give the player an unfair advantage over other players who are playing with their natural ability. “The sport badly needs to restore the public’s confidence in the purity of competition.
A topic that has landed many of the world's finest athletes with million dollar fines and long term suspensions is the use of Performance Enhancing Drugs. Stars like Barry Bonds, Lance Armstrong, and Mark McGwire have all been caught using these illegal substances. The most recent athlete caught for using Performance Enhancing Drugs was Alex Rodriguez (A-Rod). In 2013, A- Rod was placed on a two hundred and eleven game suspension from Major League Baseball that would ban him from the 2014 season also. Along with his suspension, Rodriguez was not paid his two-million dollar contract during those two years (Morgan).
Another significant step that Major-League Baseball took was making the consequences more severe. For a first-time offender against the ban a player receives an eighty-game suspension and they can not compete in the postseason. If a player tests positive for a second time they are than suspended for a whole entire season. Then comes a third-time offender which has
Rose was banned for betting on the game of baseball, which is prevalent in America. However, players who continue to abuse steroids are given opportunity after opportunity to clean up their acts, but some of the athletes end back in the same situation as they were before. The suspensions increase as the number of offenses increases, but after a while Bud Selig should possible consider banning players due to them continue to taint the game. According to Michael Shermer, “Athletes have a huge incentive to dope.” In Shermer’s article, he discusses the small chance that athletes have of getting caught with using steroids.
This does not end once the player goes off to the next level either. Major college programs produce soft policies that allow their athletes to get away with steroid abuse; however some do punish them. Athletes at numerous institutes face few consequences by deciding to use a growth hormone to gain an edge over their opponents. Many begin using performance enhancers at the collegiate level and often increase use once they make it to the league. In the NFL, many may argue that the problem has gotten worse considering the increase in weight of players.
Mahmoud Elbadry Dr. Maha Hassan Rhet 1020-08 13 March 2016 Performance Enhancing Drugs: An Annotated Bibliography Research Question: Why do athletes use performance enhancing drugs, what is the ethical dilemma in using them, and what are the effects of their use on sports? However only .5%-2% of drug tests are found to be positive, but the estimated percentage of athletes using PEDs is 14%-39% 3. Coaches and athletes suggest that the actual percentage of users is much higher. This is evidence that even though PEDs are banned from professional sports, they are still being used, and drug tests are barely effective. PEDs should be allowed to level the playing field for all athletes, because they will be used regardless if they are allowed.
In conclusion, Performance Enhancing Drugs should not be tolerated in any sport, whether professional or amatuer. These drugs are highly dangerous and even lethal to all athletes who use them. It is also unfair to athletes who choose not to use these drugs, as they are performing on their hard work and talent and not relying on an “edge” to help them reach their goals. These drugs are highly addictive, just like any other street drug or alcohol and can be fatal in many cases.
Another bad thing that PEDs can cause is bad acne, an increase in good and bad cholesterol, high blood pressure, and violence, rage, and anger issues. Another downside of doping is if you get caught doping, you could never compete again as an athlete. They can make you bald, give you mood swings, Depression issues, They are addictive, and they can also make your tendons more likely to become sore or
Lastly (transition), many athletes that use steroids are better than their opponents, by cheating. Athletes that use steroids should have bigger consequences. Picture this every athlete in sports using drugs no one depends on skill anymore everyone depends on performance enhancing drugs like adrenaline and steroids. Many athletes today use drugs to enhance their skills in all sports. This is a problem because some athletes use their own skills and are getting beaten by athletes who use drugs. Performance enhancement drugs create an unfair advantage over those athletes who choose to rely on their own skill. Banning drugs in sports can make a difference in the athlete 's health Drugs like steroids could decrease the user 's lifespan Performance enhancers, like steroids and other forms of doping have a negative effect on long term health ¨Gary Becker, PhD Professor in the Departments
Athletes use of performance enhancing drugs has become all too common in today’s society. With many athletes testing positive for doping, sports are becoming tarnished with athletes trying to gain an unfair advantage on their competitors. Although players are tested often for such drugs, there are still many loopholes and some drugs are not detected by current systems. So what would cause an athlete to put their body at risk to gain just a slight edge on their competitor? Sports should be a test of real skill, not artificial skills given by doctors.
Mr. J. Hirby of lawdictionary.org states: Many professional athletes take steroids illegally, which not only represent a potential felony convictions but may also result in permanent career damages. People take steroids because it helps them build muscle quickly and perform more effectively at top levels. However, they are considered cheating by many sports enthusiasts, and they are banned from use because no organization wants to lend its support to a practice that leads to severe health risks for the sake of improved athletic performance (Hirby). This quote stated above describes how it is in-fact cheating to use steroids in pro sports as believed by sport enthusiasts and many fans.
