For Women in America, Equality Is Still an Illusion Did you know? Women account for 60% of the world’s hunger. 62 million girls are denied education around world. In the United States poverty rates are higher for women than men. Women with full-time jobs still earn only about 77 percent of their male counterparts’ earnings. Women serving in the military are more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. The scariest statistics of them all, women around the world aged 15-44 are more at risk from rape and domestic violence than from cancer, car accidents, war and malaria. While there have been many advancements and achievements in women’s rights throughout the years. Gender equality still exists today, even in the US women and men do not have equal rights. (Makers, 2015) In the Washington post there is a good article on women’s rights and gender equality. The article titled For Women in America, Equality Is Still an Illusion, by Jessica Valenti begins by pointing out issues affecting women in other parts of the globe. In the article, Valenti talks about how women in other countries are going through tough situations, yet people react by sending …show more content…
She does not deny that there have been indisputable gains that have elevated the lives of women especially in the United States. There are also many feminist that have been campaigning for the equal rights of women. However, those efforts are being mistaken for milestones in women’s equality to a point that little is being done to address inequality. In the article she gives examples of George Sodini, who opened fire at a gym killing three women and injuring nine. When an Amish school in Pennsylvania was attacked by a gunman, he seemed to have specifically targeted the girls. The gunman sent the boys out before abducting, sexually assaulting and eventually killing twelve girls. (Valenti,
Women are viewed as fragile and delicate, but strong enough to keep a house clean, kids in line and a happy husband. Women are expected to be stay at home moms and depend on their husbands for everything while having no opinions of their own. However, there are women who have overlooked those expectations and proved that women are capable of doing anything. Deborah Sampson and Elizabeth Van Lew are just two women who have helped break the norms of women’s roles in society. Sampson’s impressive braveness and loyalty to fight for her country against all odds have proved that women are capable to endure harsh horrors.
The fight for women’s equality is more commonly known as the feminist movement, but sometimes this can be misconstrued for something else. If people say that the movement is about something other than obtaining the same equality men are treated with; because of this, chances are it is not a feminist group. It’s like saying the KKK is fighting for white equality, and white history (Pride) when what it really is, is just religious extremist group. Man’s power over women is not something new, and never was; because men have always had the upper hand, whether it was from religion or from government rules.
The Chicana feminist is not widely accepted, or even recognized. At its best, Chicana writers and artists take to paper and other mediums to share the message. Writers, such as Andzaldua, comment on the necessity for writing. The Chicana expression of creative thought, otherwise unnoticed by the majority of people, is important in that it allows people to show the struggle, emotion, and wisdom surrounding personal experience (Andzaldua). Poetry, for instance, can be described as a political act, which enables further thought and understanding between people.
The fight for equality is an ongoing battle for women even in the contemporary society but has improved substantially due to
This article appeals to not only people in the military, yet also women who fight for women's rights; such as the National Organization for Women
Today, most would think that all humans have equal rights. Unfortunately, though, women are still not treated as equal as men. Women do not get paid as much as men do, they are expected to stay home and take care of the children, and they do not have as many job opportunities as men do. All of this is in spite of the fact that women have been fighting for their rights in this country since the 1800s. Two of the most widely known speeches are “Ain’t I a Woman” and “Speech at Seneca Falls Convention.”
In India, there is also another conflict where women are treated less than men and people are starting to speak up about this issue, as seen in Document 2. The #IWillGoOut movement is a protest where women demand equal rights to public places that men have all rights to. This is a form of how societies group their members. You can see that because these women are a different gender, they do not get all the rights that everyone else has.
Women in America claim that they are still oppressed, women in America claim they still don’t have the same rights as men, and women in America claim that they are discriminated against, but is this true? Are women still in the 1950 's where they didn’t have the right to vote and own land? No, if anything women are "privileged"! Ever since 1920 women have had all rights every other American citizen is granted. Women in America have more job opportunities and equal pay (as opposed to other countries), they have certain rights to their children that men do not have, and they are not discriminated against in court and law as much as men.
Inequality of women Vera Nazarian said, “ A woman is a human. She is not better, stronger, wiser, more intelligent, more creative, or more responsible than a man. She is never less. Equality is a given. A woman is a human.”
Gender equality: the pinnacle concept that American society is not-so desperately trying to achieve. Many Americans have convinced themselves that gender equality was remedied by the Nineteenth Amendment and the Second Feminist Movement, and have not considered the thousands of steps that are left on the journey. In recent years, a matter of public interest has been the gender wage gap, stating that women are earning significantly less money than men for doing an equivalent amount of work. Critics of the effort to “break the glass ceiling” claim that a pay gap does not exist, and that if it does, it is because women either do not work as hard, have to tend to their families, or hold lower paying jobs. However, the gender pay gap has been proven to exist in a variety of different forms,
In her essay, “The Longest War,” Rebecca Solnit addresses the unrelenting and seemingly endless physical and sexual violence that affects thousands of women in the United States, and millions internationally, as nothing less than a “pandemic of violence by men against women” that is continuously disregarded for what it truly is- an assault on human and civil rights (2). Solnit presents many statistics throughout the essay, including the fact that women worldwide are “more likely to die or be maimed because of male violence”, because of the gendered violence that many refuse to acknowledge despite the plethora of data that backs the claims (5). Solnit asserts that for the ceaseless assaults to end, the violence needs to be clearly defined
Equality. What is equality? Have a quick think about that. The dictionary says: the state or quality of being equal. But what does this actually mean to you and today in society?
Aubrey Rose A, Barangot English 27B Title Gender Equality: An Established Human Right Thesis Gender Equality and Stereotypes Inroduction The gender equality has been accepted and acknowledged as human rights’ principles since the adoption of charter of United Nations in 1945. Most of the international agreements such as ‘the Millennium Development Goals (2000)’ and ‘the World Conference on Human Rights (1993) have highlighted and stressed the grave need for nations to take appropriate actions against such discriminatory practices. To give clarity to this research, the researcher uses the following definitions: “Everyone has a fundamental right to live free of violence.
It is important for teachers to create an environment that promotes fairness in order for students to succeed. Equality and equity are both needed to do this. Equality in a class means every student has the same opportunity to succeed. Making accommodations for students is called equity. This is needed in a class to ensure an equal opportunity to succeed is possible for every student.
Gender Equality is the only way forward. What is gender equality? Gender equality is achieved when all genders enjoy the same rights and opportunities across all sectors of society, including economic participation and decision-making, and when the different behaviors, aspirations and needs of women and men are equally valued and favored.
