In the contemporary times, great importance is given to the significance of early years of a child’s life. It is widely acknowledged now-a-days that the early childhood years are a predominantly receptive phase in the developmental process. This stage is responsible to lay a foundation in early days and later years for cognitive functioning, learning process, physical wellbeing, and self-regulatory capacities in both personal and social lives. In simple words, “the period from birth to age 5 is one of opportunity and vulnerability for healthy physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development” (Karoly, Kilburn & Cannon, 2005). However, it is also a fact that many children go through several stressors during their developmental years due to which their healthy development may be impaired. ISSUE: Program Effectiveness of Head Start and Early Head Start INTRODUCTION: Through two of my favorite quotes, “We worry about what a child will become tomorrow, yet we forget that he is someone today" By Stacia Tauscher and "Children are likely to live up to what you believe of them" by Lady Bird Johnson, it is clear to see that there is a fine line of wanting to help a child succeed, and enabling the natural process. Education of our future generations is an understandably important topic that requires agreement from lawmakers, community leaders, teachers and parents. However, through all of the educational planning, teaching and testing, it is a humbling point to remember that these children are in fact people and deserve respect for their culture and socio-economic status no matter what they may be. We must remember to honor and uphold our many differences, including approaches to education and speed of learning.
Intervention should start as early as possible, like when parents begin to notice their child is not developing as expected and they voice these concerns. A common response is “they will grow out of it or we will just wait and see”. But, the longer the wait the more difficulties the child and family will have. The earlier a problem is identified, the earlier intervention can begin, which leads to the likelihood of the child learning the skills they need to communicate, engage in social interactions and manage behaviors. Research shows that children who receive early intervention services are more likely to have improved long-term outcomes.
Fuller and Strath (2001) conducted a quantitative research study that examined local populations of early education organizations based on the 1990 household census data to report features of the early childhood workforce nationwide. Multiple economic and regulatory forces shaped the population of early education organizations that operated within states and local communities. The median center-based teacher was 34 years of age, reported having completed some college, and was married. The median family childcare home provider had a high school diploma. Head Start programs bring and excellent pattern to close the gaps between children from social-economic differences from those of low social-economic background. This location is located on an extremely busy intersection in the industrial part of town, which keeps this store a busy. This store is relatively small compared to others but the exterior is maintained, walkways are clear and salted. It also has bundles of wood, washer fluid and antifreeze stacked along the entrance walkway, cluttered but well set up for their needs. Both assistance looked directly at me when I entered but failed to extend an acknowledgment, neither a verbal or nonverbal greeting or smile.
