Many Southern white folks were slave owners back in the 1800s. Since they were slave owners, African American slaves had no freedom or rights. White people were constantly taking their freedom for granted, and took away African-Americans rights and freedom. Abraham Lincoln was in opposition to slavery, and the opposing opinions on freedom and equality is what caused the Civil War to begin. The Civil War changed many people's perspective on freedom and equality because before the Civil War, freedom and equality was not an option for many people. Before the Civil War, not everyone had freedom in the United States. White people would habitually belittle their freedom, and take away African Americans freedom and rights. For example, in Ain’t I a Woman, the text states that Truth, has witnessed all thirteen of her children sold to become slaves. (Gage, 2). In other words, African-Americans were born and then they were quickly sold to be slaves. African-American kids and babies instantly lose their rights and freedom, and sadly, they are separated from their mother and perhaps even their siblings once they are born. Furthermore, in the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln stated that the “new nation” was very committed to the claim that all men are created equally (Lincoln,1). This shows that Abraham Lincoln wants the nation to be full of equality. With this being said, African-Americans should no longer be judged for the color of their skin, or be kept as slaves because of the color of their skin.
