It’s painful to see someone suffering from a dislocated knee, but even more so if it happened to you Although knee dislocations are considered rare, and only accounts for about less than 0.5 percent of joint dislocations, it could happen to anyone.
Women, such as female athletes, are more at risk of having knee dislocations due to their body structure. While women have wider and shapely hips than men, these add more stress on their knees making them more prone to knee injuries.
Aside from women, younger people who are aged 10 to 20 years old are also at risk of knee dislocations since they are more active and do a lot of movement.

Though your knee ligaments are tough, these unfortunate incidents could cause the tearing of your ligaments leaving your knee joints loosely connected which will then lead to a knee dislocation.
Common Signs and Symptoms of Knee Dislocation
Not because you experience pain on one of your knees, it doesn’t mean that your knee is already dislocated. However, if you experience most of these signs and symptoms, it is indicative that you have knee dislocation.
Your kneecap is obviously out of place. A knee dislocation is present when your leg doesn’t seem to be aligned due to your dislocated kneecap. Most often, when your knee experienced a severe impact, your kneecap will move from the center to the side, either left or right.
Your kneecap feels all wobbly. When you try to touch your kneecap, you could easily move it on either side since the ligaments are torn making your kneecap too loose. Though your kneecap could relocate back on its original place without any intervention, in most cases, you need a medical professional to pop your kneecap
What is going on inside the joint that could cause this? When the knee becomes locked by a meniscal injury it needs immediate attention. A knee becomes locked when a torn piece of the meniscus had migrated to place that prevents farther movement of the joint opening.
This could happen because of a few reasons. The main reason for a second tear is the athlete going back to their sport too quickly. As soon as an athlete is even feeling better, they are completely eager to get back to doing what they love. There are two different options you have after a torn ligament in the knee has occurred, you can undergo surgery or let the ligament heal naturally. Some reasons that you may go the natural route are the following: Partial tears in the ligament, young children with open growth plates, stability is not an issue and not involved in any activities that rely on your ACL daily (Cluett 26). It may be the best option to stay away from surgery if you are not involved in heavy physical activities and take care and rest your leg on its own. How this is done is with rest, ice, compressing and elevation, which is commonly referred to as RICE (Zelman 2). You can rest byy using crutches and laying down to take the weight off the injured leg, and ice should be applied every two hours for twenty minutes at a time while awake.
The ACL is most often torn due to a twisting motion from sudden change in direction or pivoting that occurs on a locked knee. (Gianotti, Marshall, Hume & Bunt, 2009). According to Sports Medicine Australia 1 (n.d.), majority of ACL injuries occur in high demand sports including Australian football, netball, basketball and skiing. This can result in serious mobility consequences and pain for athletes, as well as cause emotional distress due to cost of treatment and time lost from sporting activity. There is little comprehensive Australian data regarding number of ACL injuries that occur each year due to insufficient reporting.
