In 1789, thirty-eight men who helped shape America into what it is now signed the Constitution of The United States of America, approving it’s message and the rights, or Amendments, listed within it. The first Amendment listed in the Constitution is the right of freedom of speech, the press, to peaceably assemble, and religion. However, in current times, citizens are challenging this Amendment by censoring the media, books, T.V shows, and movies. Why is it that people are doing this now, after nearly 230 years? Some people believe that certain information and ideas must be withheld from certain minorities and age groups, and few others believe that some ideas must be censored to everybody. Many other people, though, believe that no information or ideas should be withheld from anyone at all, and feel that way for many reasons. Take the book Nasreen’s Secret School for example, who many people have split opinions on.
Nasreen’s Secret School takes place in Afghanistan, which many people have issues about. Some people believe that children

In the first few pages, there are soldiers shown with dangerous firearms, and only a few pages later soldiers are shown taking men and boys away from their families. Parents and adults may believe that children will be taught to view all governments in a negative light, and will rebel against the government when they are older. If adults taught children that not all governments are the same, though, and that the government is meant to protect citizens and not hurt them, then children wouldn’t be that way.
Therefore, if adults tried to explain to children the messages and themes conveyed in Nasreen’s Secret School, and other books like it, there wouldn’t be a need to censor; children and teens would be able to understand better the differences in the world and other ideals and cultures without being negatively
Censorship The United States Government is finding new ways to censor citizen’s freedom. Are they taking it too far by removing online content and books that might be considered offensive to the general public. The government should not take away offensive reading content for three reasons. Firstly all citizens should not be limited to what books they are allowed to read considering we have been granted freedom from the government with the first Amendment. Secondly, books are people’s best teachers and provide real life knowledge for kids and adults who are trying to comprehend subjects that we not taught throughout the many years of education.
By limiting what children and students can read, the government is also limiting their education and opportunities for personal growth. Children and students should have the right to choose what they want to read and explore new ideas, and they should not be denied access to information and knowledge because of government censorship. The government's attempt to limit what students can read in schools is also a threat to their education and personal freedom. Schools should provide students with access to diverse sources of information and encourage them to explore new ideas and perspectives.
I believe that the author’s thesis is about the issue of censorship and how it impacts our First Amendment. The author presents us a two different perspective of the issue. Such as, our practice of our First Amendment can lead us to a place where someone can create materials that we may find offensive. But are protected by the First Amendment at the same time could have people who want to limit offensive material and therefore, through censorship are limiting the First Amendment rights of others. To demonstrate her point, Susan Jacoby, interviewed a small sample of women to gather their perspective about an image from a Playboy magazine.
The Importance of the 1st Amendment In 1787 our founding fathers assembled the constitution of the United States of America. Of this which contains the most important document to the American citizen, the Bill of rights. The first Amendment states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances” These freedoms granted by the Bill of Rights are often known as freedom of expression. These rights are most important to a truly free society. The first amendment provides us with new ideas and dismisses the fear of punishment
“The state of kids publishing is such that it’s perfectly reasonable to be concerned about what agenda-driven and/or prurient content they’re peddling.” (Hemingway) This means it is very reasonable for everyone to be concerned about what the kids and young adults are reading. If parents are not concerned about what their child is reading, their child will follow many bad influences from books they have read. There are many influential books such as The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton that should be banned.
Chapter 4 of the book We the People talks about Civil Liberties, this chapter mainly talks about the Rights that were placed in the Constitution (not in the Bill of Rights), it also talks about the Bill of Rights and it describes the rights protected by the Bill of Rights. It also talks about specific rights that work close together with the Bill of Rights and Amendments rights. One of the first Amendments that is described in great detail is Freedom of Speech and Religion. The first Amendment protects US citizens right to talk about almost any topic in the United States. I said almost any topic because there are some forms of speech that aren’t protected by the First Amendment (these forms of speech can be limited or prohibited), some of the forms of speech that aren’t protected by the First Amendment are Fighting Words and Hate Speech, Student Speech, Libel and Slander speech.
Censorship of The First Amendment This paper will discuss how censorship denies citizens of the United States our full rights as delineated in the First Amendment. It will outline how and why the first amendment was created and included in the Constitution of the United States of America. This paper will also define censorship, discuss a select few legal cases surrounding freedom of speech and censorship as well as provide national and local examples of censorship.
The First Amendment to the United States Constitution states “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech”. Some people in today’s time would argue the first amendment is one of the most important listed in the Bill of Rights. Many forms of speech are protected by the first amendment that one wouldn’t think would be such as flag burning and “adult videos”. Over the years there have been many different court cases that have debated and fought the forms of speech that are protected. Many people in society treat speech differently and this is given in the United States because there are such diverse groups throughout the nation.
Censorship Censorship in schools may not be the best choice for enriching the future minds of the United States of America. Children of the United States of America should have the right to learn about anything for it is there amended right. Taking knowledge away from them and censoring it should not be the answer to keeping our Children pure it should be what we teach our kids. We need to teach them right and wrong that is what will keep our child’s mind pure. Many books are being taken off shelves every day in student libraries because a couple people do not think that the book is suitable for children.
In 1998, McClintock High School in Tempe, Arizona assigned students to read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. The book has long been regarded as a controversial novel, and each generation that comes upon it has found something that rubs against the current societal norms. The mother of a student at McClintock took serious offense to the use of the word, “nigger” throughout the book and protested that it be banned due to the racial discrimination (Source I). Huck Finn is just one of the many pieces of literature that have been labelled “challenging,” and many feel that they do not deserve a place in schools’ curriculum. However, the study of challenging literature introduces students to new ideas and lessons that they can apply
1984: An Unfortunate Banning What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist. Salman Rushdie, British-Indian author (1947-)
Also, some say that you should not be exposing bad behavior or language to students but in reality they hear and see these things everyday, and by banning a book, that is not protecting them. Writers have the freedom to write whatever they want and that is a part of the First Amendment, so why banned their book? “The First Amendment allows individuals to speak, publish, read and view what they wish, worship (or not worship) as they wish, associate with
It is evident that censorship is widely common in school. Some books are banned from school libraries due to content, while others are banned from being read in English classes. "Censorship is particularly harmful in the schools because it prevents students with inquiring minds from exploring the world, seeking truth and reason, and stretching their intellectual capacities, and becoming
Censorship can be described as the act of cutting out certain material that can be considered obscene or inconvenient for the community. This material can be found in social media such as in the TV, radio, or the internet. Censorship can be challenged because of the first amendment: freedom of speech. Free expression is the right of expressing opinions and ideas without any fear of being restrained or censored. However, freedom of speech does not include the right to incite actions that would harm others or the distribution of obscene material (Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, 2000).
