Suicide and Self-harm is one of the main leading causes in youth deaths in today 's society. The thought of ending his or her life is one of the thoughts developing in teenagers’ minds around the globe. There are many reasons to why a person will put their life at risk, such as stress, depression, loss of a loved one, or being bullied. Constant use of drugs or alcohol is also another leading cause to a person to have suicidal thoughts/actions. Suicide is not the way to go, there are plenty of other options to overcome suicidal thoughts or actions. Teenage suicide is definitely preventable when the right help is present. It can be recognized on the internet, gossiping, and phone callings. In almost all cases teenagers who bully others get some type of satisfaction in causing pain and injury to other teenagers. Being bullied should be an experience that no youth ever has to go through. Young teens who are being bullied try to seek out ways to cope with the pain and suffering. As a result, teen suicide is the third leading cause for all deaths among teens aged 15-19. Teens suicide attempts and completions have steadily been on the rise since 2000. Surveys have found that 25% of high school and 10% of college students have seriously considered suicide sometime in their life. Therefore, any teen who mentions anything about suicide should be taken seriously.” (Reed) Frala 2
Every suicide attempt comes with warning signs even
Signs such as, “feelings of sadness, or hopelessness, declining school performance, loss of pleasure/interest in social and sports activities, sleeping too little or too much, changes in weight or appetite, nervousness, agitation or irritability, and substance abuse.” Wager warns parents of teens that are expressing these types of behaviors to notify a doctor or therapist before the situation gets worse. Teens with a sense of hopelessness tend to believe that suicide is the only way out. Wager states, “America’s young people with thoughts of suicide all having their own unique circumstances leading them all to the same conclusion: Suicide being in their mind a sane decision to what they feel to be an insane situation.”
Some students--kids in this school are probably going through some dark times. Up at the high school, “55 LHS students reported they recently tried to commit suicide at least once (3%). The Massachusetts average for attempted suicide among teenagers/young adults was 7% over the same time period (4.1% for comparison high schools). Additionally, 247 students (15% of those surveyed) seriously considered suicide - the highest level in a decade.” These numbers are real, and this issue is right here, and right now in our very own town of Lexington.

“The one place of connection that has the potential to be most stable for all children, teens, and adults alike is the family environment.” Teen suicide has many reasons behind it, some people may not know. Based on Judith Peacock’s research on the subject, “No one is sure why more teens today are taking their own life” (Peacock pg.1). More suicides have been happening without explanation…. Or maybe the answer has always been under our noses.
As of 2015, 5 in 100,000 girls and 14 in 100,000 teenagers commit suicide (Lewis). Teenagers are becoming more vulnerable and schools seem to be taking no notice. If these lives could be saved, it would help so many families across the united states. The National Institute of Mental Health states that there “are as many as 25 attempts of suicide to every one that is actually committed” (Eco Child’s Play). Suicides can be prevented by treatment of the illness.
Technology has been expeditiously changing over previous generations. Those born between 1946 - 1964 are classified as Baby Boomers, and from 1995 - 2012 are catergorised as Generation Z. Over the years, youths become more connected to their mobile phones and given up and lost real connections and relationships? The behaviour standards and the influence from Baby Boomers has significantly altered towards the youths over the past decades. Generation Z has an overall population of 82 million worldwide, with the oldest turning 23 and the youngest turning 6 (Robinson, 2018). As part of the research, Shane Lynch was interviewed from the Generation Baby Boomers.
Suicide. The action of killings oneself intentionally. A word synonymous with despair and tragedy, this act may be taken due to several reasons but if focused on a particular demographic, such as college students, the reasons may be clearer. It is widely accepted that causes of suicides are largely (if not completely) mentally related. With high amounts of stress and pressure coupled with ever amounting expectations on still developing minds, it does not seem difficult to correlate why the rates of suicide among college students is steadily increasing.
Suicide has continued to rise as one of the leading causes of death worldwide (Suicide). Each year, no matter what the cause is, 44,193 people in the U.S. are taking their own life. The effects of suicide are tragic and felt long after the individual has taken their own life. Some people who consider suicide, however, never make a “serious” attempt at it.
