In the first scene, the author begins the story with the image of Reverend Parris kneeling and praying for his daughter, Betty Parris, who was unresponsive on the bed. The room of the first scene is described as spaceful, airy, and pristine. In the first scene, the audience receives a brief inside look on Reverend Parris’ history, such as his struggle to be liked by the Congregation and his indifference toward others. The opening scene also introduces the small town of Salem that serves as the setting of the novel. The “village” by our standards was historically nothing more than a trade post to the rest of Europe, but the people within the region felt a sense of moral responsibility to be a model for the rest of the Christian world. He lives in the tiny “town” of Salem, Massachusetts. The town was led by a very strict and somber code, although they did have occasional special gatherings, and of course there were some people who did not work as hard as the rest. The people were very snobbish, and refused to associate with people who were not of the Puritan faith. The opening pages also provide a certain insight to the plot, saying that “one could cry witch against one’s neighbor and feel perfectly justified in the bargain” (8). This will be, of course, one of the main conflicts of the
In this book, Boyer and Nissenbaum go deeper to help us as readers understand the truth of Salem Village and their witchcraft accusations in 1692. The two believed the witchcraft occurred because of the differences in social classes, geography, and the desperate need to establish a strong community in the midst of it all. There was a separation within Salem Town and Salem Village, where as Salem Village was not a part of Salem Town and the Village paid taxes to the Town. Within the separation was two families, the Putnam's and the Porter’s. The Putnam’s lived in Salem Village and enjoyed living there where they supported the new church and the new minister Samuel Parris.

The narrator describes Salem as a new town with strict puritan way of life and its out look on the rest of the world. The town saw itself as persecuted a legacy of persecution puritans faced in the old world because the puritans sought a community they managed to survive. Around 1692 much that was good about the puritans the narrator suggests has been lost. The Salem witch trials were an opportunity for the neighbors to vent against neighbors to publicly air long standing jealousy to accuse those they disliked and all while sounding righteous and religious. The first scene opens as Tituba the Rev Parisis slave enters the bedroom.
The times back then were terrible. The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller in 1953 about The Salem Witch Trials of 1692.McCarthyism was the “witch hunt” for the communist in 1953.the parallels between The Crucible and McCarthyism are naming names, lack of proof ,and reststance. The first reason they are parallel is because of naming names. Hollywood director Elia Kazan went in front of the HUAC twice. The first time he did not confess and names.
Imagine the wicked House of Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) arrest an innocent man. The HUAC does not arrest the man because he has committed a murder, but because he is a communist. This horrendous crime was a routine in the Red Scare crisis of the 1950s. Since this situation involves one's rights to be in threat, the man should speak out for his freedom. Many communists in America made the right decision to speak out for their freedom during the period of the McCarthy “witch” hunts.
Power in Salem flourished in 1962 at the beginning of the Salem Witch Trials. Power is the ability or right to control people, things, or outcomes. The way to have power is to capture it. In the Arthur Miller play, The Crucible, one person abused their power; while the other person was elevated in their social structure in order to save or end innocent people’s lives with her power within her knowledge. In The Crucible, Abigail Williams and Tituba express their power through the means of threats and actions, good or bad.

Based on the tragic events of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, The Crucible is a hard-hitting tale that reflects upon the subjectivity of goodness and virtue, sparking the reflection of the importance of moral behavior during times of hardship and crisis. In an unyielding and restricted Puritan community like Salem village, a bad reputation could result in social exclusion and scorning from the community. As a result, many members of the community would go to extremes to avoid tarnishing their reputations. The Crucible asserts that those who are concerned only with protecting their standings are dangerous to a society, as they are willing to blame and hurt other people in order to protect themselves.

The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a dramatic play that expresses a very important message and that is how far people would go to save themselves from the hands of death. There are many characters in the Crucible who are guilty of taking innocent lives, but there are three major characters who, without a doubt, are the most at blame. The play takes place in the city of Salem, a city filled with people that would do anything to keep their reputation clean. Throughout the play, Miller is introducing multiple characters that experience changes in their decisions and negatively influence more people eventually leading up to the witch trials. The main point that the story revolves around is that people would rather lie and blame someone else instead of confessing and accepting the punishment.

The basis for The Crucible came from the witch trials which occurred in Salem, Massachusetts during the puritan era. Miller even uses some of the same characters in his dramatized play that were a part of the original witch trials in Salem. The threat of Communism and the Red Scare put fear of group mentality into many people during the late 1940-50s. The authors of 1984 and The Crucible used their respective works to comment on the social injustice going on in their own lives, which connects to injustice the exists throughout time anywhere in the world. Miller wrote his play, set in 1692, about Puritans and the Salem witch trials because he believed that, similar to his trial for HUAC in the 1950s, the trials in Salem were caused by false accusations and mass hysteria led by powerful individuals. In 1984, Orwell creates a world in the near future that shows group mentality and its threat to conform society with the government.
