The media has long played a role in influencing how people construct and perceive the world. Media has influenced how people construct their thoughts, most often their perception towards someone. Youth in particular, have been presented in a variety of ways in the media. Although teenagers are portrayed differently as an individual, based upon characteristics and personality, the media is constructed to sell certain ideologies of youth or the youth culture in general to the audiences and then to the society. The media promotes both, diversity and conformity when representing the youth culture in the media but in my opinion, conformity reigns superiority. The media promotes conformity in the way youth culture is portrayed. The fact that media like films and TV shows characterize youth as conformity, it reinforces values and ideological hegemony to the audience, thus constructing their knowledge and view of youths. In the article of Gerard Jones, “Violent Media is Good for Kids” he tries to convince the audience, especially parents, that violent media is good for kids. He explains that violent media can be very beneficial to kids instead of harming them. Gerard Jones uses many literary devices to persuade the audience. He uses his own childhood experiences; he shares how he was, able to overcome his challenges or as Jones states in his article overcome “passivity and loneliness”. He also uses his son to continue to persuade the audience.
I have gained the understanding of the part of popular films in portraying contemporary society by telling stories. Reading some newspapers, we might believe the country was under danger from violent youths. Youth crime is a problem, but it is not as rampant as the public seem to regard as true. Such theories are prevalent to which the majority of people believe in reproducing dominant beliefs (Hogeveen, 82 and Schissel,165). This opinion can be acquired through the ideological use of the mass media, in centrally producing and circulating knowledge about juvenile delinquency.
Particularly, the negative images promoted by the media raise concerns regarding the degree to which media should be subjected to censorship . The use of profanity, violence, and negative imagery in all forms of popular media has become commonplace in today’s society. Such nonchalant promotion of said images in public media has negatively impacted the minds of people, and this carelessness could be linked to an increase in self-destructive behavior and violence. Consequently, there should be a stronger censorship of detrimental imagery in today’s media because the ideals expressed in the popular media influence audiences to make irresponsible choices, and millions of young people are influenced by the media of today’s society.
