Ethical Issues In Stem Cell Research

Ethics are the difference between right or wrong, to follow laws, what humans are supposed to do, common sense, rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or culture. Charlie Gordon is a slow person that was experimented on to be more intelligent. Charlie Gordons doctors acted ethically when they performed surgery on him to make him smart. The doctors had all medical indications and agreed to do the operation (Siegler). Some say Charlies doctors did not act ethically when they did the operation on him because its not natural for humans to do that.

The goal with fetal tissue research is to find new and improved ways of dealing with diseases. Almost everyone in our country has used a source that has come from the research of fetal tissue. (Fetal tissue, 5) So on the ethics and morals side of the argument any fetal tissue used for research has helped saved millions of people from dealing with diseases such as chickenpox, flu, etc. The argument most people make is that abortion is evil and shouldn’t be supported.

Globally, scientists are turning to stem cell research as the most promising step to curing many of the harshest diseases and conditions including cancer, Alzheimer’s, stroke, paralysis and many more. Stem cells are useable as a replacement for damaged cells because of their self renewing properties. Their form allows them to act as other types of cells and regenerate as a substitute for the affected cells or as a way of testing new medications. Stroke related disabilities alone account for more than 1.2 million people and millions more are impacted by other cell related disabilities making stem cell research an essential pursuit in order to make strides in medicine (Cunningham 368).

Research is an investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts. It has helped humans to understand, improve and develop new methods of health care, new theories or laws. However, many achievements made in research practice with human subjects violated the participants’ rights and dignity. Since there were no regulations in the past about using human subjects for research, many human lives were damaged or lost. In the 1960s and 1970s, a series of scandals concerning mistreatment of human subjects in research underlined the need to protect human participants in research (“Ethical and Policy Issues in Research”, 2001).

Embryonic stem cell treatment has the potential to be very beneficial to our society. Nevertheless, many people oppose the use of embryonic stem cells due to the fact that they are extracted from human embryos. They believe that embryos are human life and should possess the same rights that humans do.

Discussions, ethical issues, disputes and polemics about embryonic stem cell research are not born of technical or scientific considerations, but primarily from the underlying issue of its origin and the way it is derived. This paper is not an exhaustive discussion on this issue, but it is worth recalling that any attempt to define the boundary between life and non-life, in regard to the time of conception and its death, has failed.
