Women has greatly suffered in society from the beginning until now and no one seems to notice this prolonged issue that women have to endure in their daily lives. The media played a major role to how women are perceived in todays society. Nevertheless, in todays world more and more individuals are attempting to address the problem to solve this issue once and for all. Jennifer Newsom effectively convince her audience in an American documentary film: “Miss representation” to embellish the denigration of women in society and persuade the audience through the use of logos, pathos, and explicit visual images. Throughout the documentary, Newsom utilizes numerous sources such as different facts and statistics that strengthen her claim and appeal to logos for the under-representation of woman in todays society. Through the usage of her credible data that was transformed into valuable information makes the documentary more appealing to the audience. One of the interviewee, Ariella, a high school student expressed her emotion in the documentary: "We see so much in the media that there so much negativity towards woman and their weight and how they look and it just a representation of the pressure we feel to confirm to men's ideals. There this concept of the perfect woman who look this certain way and because if a woman doesn't like this way they are scrutinized." The interviewee truly expresses her emotion during the interview thus creates a strong emotional mood for the documentary. Also the fact that a high school student is fully aware of this issue will truly appeal to the audience. The viewers will highly sympathize each interviewee since this experience is from their own personal experience. The people that is being interviewed in the documentary have experienced some type conformity to the woman
Advertisements are everywhere, whether it be on the walk to the park or scrolling through my Instagram feed. They control the way we think and heavily impact the way we spend money, to do that advertisers use ethos, pathos, and/ or logos. When ethos is used on an advertisement often times, celebrities are modeling with the product because people tend to trust familiar faces. When pathos is intended to be in use, the advertisement tends to target the audience’s emotions and is often a sad ad. When logos is in use, the ad states statistics because people side with factual information.
Each of these concepts are utilized at the advantage of men, and the disadvantage of women, and has shown to provide detrimental consequences and results for women in society. However, in this film, and other films by Tyler Perry, appear to take the added step to combat these aspects that are present in the media’s portrayal of women. That the media’s extreme focus on how a girl or a woman should look like creates a misleading thought that women’s value is portrayed by their outward appearance. In society, there are several stereotypes and gender roles culturally influenced by women today. Cindy Sherman’s Untitled Film Stills series made between (1977-1980) shows different stereotypes of women in different everyday situations. This series consists of the artist posing as those female roles in seventy black and white photographs. In my opinion, by doing this series she challenges the way we view women regularly in pictures, by giving a different perspective. She strikes a feeling of sympathy in her audience and has examples that could be relatable to all different types of backgrounds. She also repeats the line “will flourish” which is to emphasize the importance of providing women with a healthy lifestyle and education, also their families.
