In my opinion, to ensure that a treatment program is evidence based, a probation officer must know current “evidence-based practices” that already work in Probation and Parole supervision. They should have knowledge of evidence-based practices that apply to program providers, field officers, supervisors, and administrators. Ultimately, I believe that it is always necessary to improve one’s knowledge and skills, then apply them into practice, utilizing only what constitutes an evidence-based effective approach.

It was a privilege to work with Laura on a team rehabilitating a severely impaired brainstem CVA patient. She uses evidence based practice to modify treatment approaches to promote positive outcomes for both her patients physical needs as well as cognitive-communicative needs. A perfect example of this was scheduling her PT session prior to an SLP comm/cog session with increasing cardiovascular effort to promote improved cognitive
In the Franciscan program change team used evidence based practice by doing the following: Identifying a problem, the problem being that physicians and systems do not reliably address the needs of people approaching death. The team researched the evidence and found that unlike most other population management programs, that addressing the needs of people approaching death does not depend on laboratory values, medications, or strict service utilization algorithms to target individuals and Instead it relies on physician perceptions. When physicians were ask to refer patients that were gravely ill who would benefit from it supportive services the evidence showed that the request was to vague and to difficult to incorporate into practice and
Azcourts.gov Arizona Judicial Branch" (2017), “Evidence-based practice (EBP) - means strategies that have been shown through current, scientific research to lead to a reduction in recidivism. EBP is a body of research done through meta-analysis (a study of studies) that has provided tools and techniques that have been proven to be effective at reducing recidivism. These tools and techniques allow probation officers to determine risk and criminogenic characteristics of probationers and place them in appropriate supervision levels and programs. There are eight evidence-based principles for effective offender interventions” (Evidence Based Practice). I may make recommendations for consequences based upon a juvenile’s adjudication.
The work of a probation officer often involves monitoring offenders, choosing the proper rehabilitation services, and helping
Over the past two decades, drug treatment courts have gained traction as popular alternatives to the conventional war on drugs and to its one-dimensional focus on incarceration. Specifically, the courts are meant to divert addicts from jails and prisons and into coerced treatment. Under the typical model, a drug offender enters a guilty plea and is enrolled in a long-term outpatient treatment program that is supervised closely by the drug court. If the offender completes treatment, his plea is withdrawn and the underlying charges are dismissed. But, if he fails, he receives an alternative termination sentence.
According to Learningpath.org (n.d.), some of the methods used by Juvenile Probation Officers to help prevent youths from reoffending include
Evidence based practice (EBP) is a process of integrating high quality evidence into practice or care provided by health professionals and decision makers in health care. This discussion will explore the meaning of the term Evidence Based Practice further and discuss its origins. EBP requires finding the best available evidence to inform practice, its greatest benefit being the best possible care for a client. Other benefits and limitations will be further discussed below. EBP demands the client be seen as an individual and their unique circumstances be considered in the application of evidence
The responsivity principle states that clinicians should tailor treatment delivery that will produce the most effective outcomes depending on unique needs of the client. It is important that the therapist considers each offender individually and adequately assesses their cultural, mental, and physical needs. There are several advantages (pros) and a couple disadvantages (cons) to the therapeutic approach of the RNR model. The pros of this model are that treatment intensity is matched with individual risk level, dynamic issues that are directly linked with crime, and that specific treatment is tailored to individual offenders. By matching treatment intensity to risk level, offenders receive treatment that will be most effective in meeting their therapy needs.
Although people in favor of centralized probation argue that decentralizing probation has its flaws such as local probation following outdated practices, I believe with the proper training given to local law enforcement they will be better able to train staff with the updated procedures and possibly make a change in a person’s
The Drug Treatment Alternative-to-Prison Program is another attempt to provide better treatment for people who are convicted. The study showed that drug offenders who underwent a treatment program outside of prison had a 26 percent less rate of re-arrest after two years than a control group that was sent to prison (Justice Policy Institute, 2010). Rehabilitative programs like the Second Chance Act and the Drug Treatment Alternative-to-Prison Program has shown to growth and positive
However, there are a few factors to consider. Probation officers may work with a variety of offenders, including those convicted of drug offenses, white-collar crimes, and domestic violence crimes. They may also work with juvenile offenders or those with mental health or substance abuse issues. Probation officers must develop relationships with offenders in order to gain their trust and help them successfully complete their probationary period. This may involve providing them with referrals to community resources and working with them to address underlying issues that may have contributed to their criminal behavior.
This is why it is vital to understand the issue from a number of perspectives, in order to identify the treatment most likely to succeed in reducing recidivism (Marshall et al.
I believe out of the seven evidence based decision making implementation principles, there are two that are consistent with the idea of recognizing failure to promote innovation. “ Treat your organization as an unfinished prototype” is the first evidence, we shouldn’t be afraid to accept new ideas or concepts in our company. Employees should feel comfortable thinking outside the box and coming to us with any idea, no matter how silly they may seem. For example Amanda Zolten though outside the box by bringing the kitty and doing something different for the company. The second one is the seven evidence that states that “we should learn from failure by using the facts to make things better.”
In some cases I believe that some methods of treatment may require more training due to the type of job. Effective supervision is based on sound theoretical principles, yet rehabilitative services tend to be atheoretical (Russell, et. al, 2005). I think that it is a must for probation and parole officers to establish and maintain a good working relationship with other probation officers and the public, have the ability to focus on, in addition to planning and managing various projects professionally and successfully. Having these qualities basic knowledge and individual characteristics, probation and parole officers will be able to handle offenders and to enforce it rules and adhere to it regulations.
