For hundreds of years African Americans have faced racial discrimination in the United States. Over and over again contracts were made that gave them hope of equality such as the Emancipation Proclamation, the 14th and 15th amendment, and the end of the separate but equal law. However, they were continuously refused the basic rights that they were promised and were still forcefully separated from whites. Racist police and white supremacists evoked fear in African American men and women who attempted to participate in the rights they were entitled to. Then, in the 1950s and 60s there was a spark of interminable protesting of the clear racial injustices that the African American people faced, this time was known as the Civil Rights Movement. …show more content…
King was able to utilize more rhetorical appeals than Hamer. In Hamer’s testimony, the genre allowed her to establish credibility early on, by introducing herself to the committee. Hamer’s main form of persuasion utilizes pathos in her testimony, by appealing to the audience’s emotions. Hamer had a limited time to speak because she was giving her testimony at a convention. Therefore, the choice of giving a personal testimony was the best way to attempt to persuade her audience, because she was able to tell a short story creating sympathy in the people listening and then relate that story to her intent to shame the committee into agreeing with her. For example, she explained what happened to her while in jail. She said, "The second Negro began to beat and I began to work my feet, and the State Highway Patrolman ordered the first Negro who had beat me to sit on my feet - to keep me from working my feet. I began to scream and one white man got up and began to beat me in my head and tell me to hush” (Hamer 1). The awful actions against her create a strong emotional reaction with her audience. On the other hand, King was fighting racism on a broader scale. The result was him giving a speech allowing him to utilize pathos, ethos and logos. He was able to take his time and establish his credibility at the beginning by starting his speech saying he is happy to be there and states that it will be one of the greatest freedom demonstrations of all time. He appeals to all different people in the audience by explaining hardships that African Americans have experienced, “Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality” (King 1). I used anaphoras, rhetorical questions, devices, analogies, and epigraphs to express the ethos, pathos, and logos in my speech. I wrote with anaphoras to get the point of America failing over and over again across to the reader. This gets the reader emotional and upset about America’s choices made, which makes the above pathos. I used rhetorical questioning to make the audience really think about the topic and to dissect all of the information given before the question. These form a light bulb in the audience’s head and again, make them think harder.
I will assess an argument with ethos, logos, and pathos which are important to present the points in my essay and these can help me make my argument appeal to audience. Ethos is thinking ethical appeal which involves convincing my audience that I have enough knowledge and can be trusted. I have to prove myself that I understand what I am arguing. Next is logos which is thinking logical appeal. I use it when I credible evidence to support my argument.

Fortas’ management of rhetorical devices gives a clear viewpoint of different perspectives being confronted to the audience. Abe Fortas uses superb diction throughout his argument in the Tinker v. Des Moines case. For instance, “That is the basis of our national strength and of the independence and vigor of Americans who grow up and live in the relatively permissive , often disputatious society.”
How can an author get the reader attention? Readers don’t like to read boring books, articles or essay. There are many strategy an author can use such as an ethos, pathos, and logos. The author can either use an emotional appeal, which is pathos, the usage of statistic and facts makes it logos, when an author builds up their character they are using ethos. When analyzing I asked myself what are these concepts used for and how can one recognize these strategies when reading?
September 11, 2001 is a day that has gone down in history as a tragic day in American history due to the horrific terrorist attacks caused by the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda. A couple of hours later following the attacks previous president George W Bush delivered a much-needed reassurance and a sense of leadership to the American people in his address to the nation when most American felt uneasy and unsure of what the future would look like. Bush uses several examples of Pathos, Ethos and Logos along with several uses of rhetorical devices to get American moral up from the ground. Pathos was used to evoke emotional responses from the audience. Logos was used to appeal to the audience’s sense of logic and reason the audience.

Ethos appeals to moral character, credibility, and tone. Logos is facts, statistics, and reason. While pathos is about emotion, impact, and personal connection.
People have been persuading one another for thousands of years, they have been using three different types of appeals, ethos, pathos and logos. Over the thousands of years people have realized the easiest appeal to use is pathos: appealing to one’s emotions. As a man named, Francois de La Rochefoucauld, a French author once said “The passions are the only orators which always persuade.” (Rochefoucauld). So once you find the passions who persuade it becomes easy, but how can you find those passions in the first place?
Ethos, pathos, and logos are equally important components used in the development of persuasive writing. The concept of ethos speaks to the character of the writer. What is the reputation of the writer? What is the writer’s level of expertise about the text? The second persuasive appeal is logos; logos addresses the audiences’ power of logic or reasoning.
In my classical argumentation essay, I used several rhetorical strategies in order to make my essay more appealing and convincing towards my readers. In my essay, I used rhetorical appeals (ethos, logos, and pathos). I used logos by providing statistics on the amount of children that are not in school and the amount of children that are employed in places like India, Nigeria and Brazil. I then used pathos by providing facts on how children are placed in hazardous environments and their lack of education. I used ethos by providing the authors of the sources that I used, who are experts in their respective fields.

Despite arguing in different positions, both teams require the usage of persuasion techniques in order to influence the jury’s verdict in their favor. Without dynamic utilization of persuasive strategies, they would not be able to acquire the support the jury who adjudicates whether or not the accused is guilty. Although both the defense and prosecution teams substantiated their arguments through the use of persuasive strategies, such as logos and pathos, deciding which techniques will most effective to justify their perspective and obtain the jury’s loyalty varied which governed the verdict.
