William Shenstone, a wise English poet, once said “A liar begins with making falsehood appear like truth, and ends with making truth itself appear like falsehood.” As you read you see that Abigail is just telling lie after lie and the majority believe her. When someone goes against what Abigail is saying and says the actual truth, everyone, of course, thinks of it as a lie. Abigail successfully changes their ways of thinking and manipulates them into trusting her. If Abigail had been taken out of the picture this situation would have been avoided. On the contrary the Puritan society can take blame for all the executions and accusations because of their religion being really strict. Puritans believed in following the Bible and punishing people who sinned. Now, everyone sins, that is no surprise. This caused everyone to constantly have to deal with their guilt and sometimes they would point out others in hopes of diverting attention from themselves. Blaming the Puritan society in general is too vague, however. This brings us to Abigail, she is …show more content…
Abigail had been aware that Mary had a poppet, I mean Mary says, “Ask Abby, Abby sat beside me when I make it.” She also happened to notice the needle in it and decided to take advantage of that. So, naturally, she stuck a needle in herself to mirror the poppet and have it be played off as witchcraft. People investigate and find the needle in the same spot where Mary was stabbed. Everyone is so delusional and terrified of the devil and witchcraft that they believe her. Proctor reaches out to the Court and claims that she is a liar, “I beg you, sir, I beg you--see her what she is.... She thinks to dance with me on my wife's grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore's vengeance, and you must see it now.” This doesn’t do any good though, no one believes him until it is too
Abigail is a manipulative liar. Famous author Arthur Miller points out in The Crucible that hysteria broke out over the perceived threat of witchcraft, which served as an analogy for the communists during the Red Scare. During the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, many Americans believed a war would break out and thus caused hysteria among society. Miller writes a play about a couple who has an affair in a religious small town. Abigail, the cleaning lady for the Proctor family, commits adultery with Mr. John Proctor is soon caught by Mrs. Elizabeth Proctor.
In the Crucible there are many heinous characters, but for me the most despicable is Abigail. The two reasons that I find her to be the most despicable is because she somehow got all her friends to perform satanic rituals with her in the forest, and also the fact that she and her friends all lied about it, which put many innocent people in jeopardy. In the beginning of the book, Parris sees a large group of girls dancing in the forest naked. As he was approaching the girls to see what was going on, all the girls ran away screaming, leaving behind a pot with a ladel and a frog in it.
Crucible Essay Abigail was very questionable in the play. She could be very quiet. Being quiet actually turned out to be pretty powerful to her.
It is crazy how things were, so strict about the religions long ago. The times of “The Crucible” everyone would be guilty of being a witch. According i think Abigail William is responsible for witchcraft. Reasons are is because, one she have lied to everyone in the village just to make herself innocent. Second, she have broken many rules and because of that it made her look guilty.
Specifically, when they are in court Abigail accuses Mary Warren of sending out a shadow onto her and the other girls; also, Mary Warren supposedly turns into a bird and tries to claw out their eyes. Abigail saw her power starting to slip and the judges started to doubt
What would you do if you were accused of witchcraft by someone who was just trying to get back at you? In Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 women were being accused of being witches and more than half of them were innocent. Arthur Miller tells about how the town fell apart after hearing the word “witch” and people lying. The whole story goes downhill because lies just keep piling up on each other. Abigail Williams and John Proctor are two big characters that lie throughout the whole play.
Correspondingly, he wants the approval of others so
There are three types of people in this world, those who fake it to make it, those who want it and go get it, and those who manipulate others to achieve it. Arthur Miller's classic, The Crucible, presents Abigail Williams as a despicable character in the play through her manipulative, dishonest, and self-centered behavior. Throughout the play she used manipulation to bring confusion and pain to the people in Salem. Manipulation was her biggest quality. Abigail uses manipulation as a weapon to obtain the love and affection of John Proctor.
The Puritans have an extremely strict and religious way of life. They do not accept any forms nor signs of witchery. Although Puritans, John Proctor, and Abigail commit a sin in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible; Thus, leading to the Salem witch trials. Abigail is responsible for the deaths of innocent puritans in Salem during the witch trials, in which 20 people were accused and executed for being a witch. She is the first to cry out witchcraft, which give her complete control over the situation, Yet, John Proctor only plays a small role in this nonsense.
Abigail, uses fear to her advantage and obtains more power to be able to manipulate a vast majority of people through her lying,“I want to open myself! I want the light God, I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil; I saw him; I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus. I kiss His hand.” (45) Abigail now starts to point fingers and uses her manipulative speech to put fear upon the minds of her friends.
Either way, the deception and manipulation stacks and stacks until she eventually goes too far to be able to come back; not that it mattered since she knew how credulous the townspeople of Salem were. At one point, Abigail’s word becomes so powerful that she can accuse anyone she doesn’t fancy and the court would believe her. Of course, the accused were stuck in an untenable position because defending themselves was useless against a court that already made up their minds. Eventually, the result of Abigail’s selfish actions led to the death of many good and innocent people. Not only did she commit perjury, but she’s basically a murderer too!
In Arthur Miller's “The Crucible” (1953), it is shown that people seem to forget basic morals when dealing with mass hysteria. Puritans in the play do not want the devil or any other demonic figures such as witches in their community, they will go to great lengths, as far as turning their back on their own people to get rid of these demonic figures as shown in “The Crucible”. This idea of witches in the community caused chaos in the village which led to the deaths of 20 people in the village. Do people in the play not care about the consequences other people face because of their actions? In the play, loyalty falls far below self selfishness in the face of mass hysteria.
With this, she also made the others lie for her and themselves. As if she was the queen bee, she was able to control anyone that would have made her look bad in any way. Abigail quoted “let either of you breathe a word, or edge of a word about the other things, and I will come to you in a black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you
n the Puritan society, power is often given to people because of the land that one owns, one 's age, one 's race, one ’s religious beliefs, or one’s reputation in the community. In Act I of The Crucible by Arthur Miller, there is a clear sense of hierarchy in their community. There are few people who pull away and actually gain or lose power regardless of their standing. With the idea that the devil has come into this community, some see this as an opportunity to gain the power that they have been lacking for most of their lives. Even though in the Puritan society, men are much more dominant, Tituba and Abigail Williams are two women who hold great power due to their involvement in the alleged witchcraft.
In the beginning of the story Abigail Williams was in love with John Proctor and was willing to do anything to be with him. She was caught dancing in the woods and was accused of witchcraft. She started to blame everyone in town she didn’t like for being a witch. She told all the girls in town that she would come in the night and kill them if they tell anyone about what they were doing in the woods. She had accused Goody Proctor of witch craft so she could have John to herself.
