What Are the Qualities of Effective and Ineffective Leadership?
The qualities of an effective leadership include responsibility, discipline, and morality, while the qualities of an ineffective leadership include corruption, selfishness, and irresponsibility.
In Macbeth, King Duncan portrays examples of effective leadership by being respectful to his subjects and by having upright morals. He shows this by being stern but not disrespectful to the wounded captain in the beginning of the play in act I, scene II.
What bloody man is that? He can report,
As seemeth by his plight, of the revolt
The newest state…
Oh, valiant cousin, worthy gentleman…
So well thy words become thee as

The captain addresses Duncan with respect and loyalty as a result of discipline, and in exchange, Duncan replies austerely but politely, and calls for surgeons to help heal the captain’s wounds. This reveals qualities of an effective leadership by showing how Duncan’s subjects obey him and how Duncan’s subjects are treated justly. Duncan also has good morality, as he quickly takes care of the wounded captain after he is done addressing Duncan. In The Analects, Confucius states that a ruler must treat his subjects responsibly and decently or else the ruler will encounter many hardships under their reign. “If a prince can govern his kingdom with tolerance and decency, what difficulty will he have? If he cannot govern it with that tolerance, how can there be decency?” (Confucius). This displays the qualities of an effective leadership because if a leader treats their subjects with respect, it is more likely that the kingdom or nation will prosper and it is less likely for there to be …show more content…
Later in the play, one of the witches’ prophecies states that Macbeth should fear Macduff from taking his power as king. Since Macduff is currently out of Scotland, Macbeth decides to target Macduff’s family and servants instead. This decision contributes to displaying Macbeth’s poor leadership qualities by showing that he is impulsive and that his actions are fueled by anger and fear rather than logic or strategy. According to Forbes “Five Similarities Between Leadership and Parenting”, accountability is one of the most important qualities an effective leader has. “Showing up on time, taking responsibility for your actions, and feeling an obligation to uphold your word by doing what you say you will, are all qualities that parents want to instill in their children…” (Forbes). Not being accountable is a major flaw for a leader because if they are not willing to take responsibility for their actions or fulfill the demands of their status, it is likely they will buckle under the weight of their corruption, ultimately collapse, and be remembered solely for their
By using his words as his weapons, he is shown as one of the most rational and honest men in the play. From the first scene, the audience immediately begins to understand his personality and how necessary he is to the development of the play. During the fight between the servants, he jumps in and declares, “Part, fools!/ Put up your swords. You know not what you do.” (1.1.61-62)
In this essay I am going to be exploring how Shakespeare shows that the key characters are disturbed. The key scenes I am going to be looking at are ‘Macbeth’ Act 2 scene 2 and ‘Romeo and Juliet’ Act 3 scene 5. Firstly, I am going to look at how the use of questions in ‘Macbeth’ shows that he is disturbed. Macbeth has just killed King Duncan; he has blood on his hands and is terribly shocked by the murder.
Another example of poor leadership is McMurphy, is essentially a child rapist, leading a bunch of crazy people. However, there is an important message in this that no matter what your circumstances you can be a great leader that has a huge effect on those around you, and in this case, it ends up being a beneficial effect that will save everyone in the

Marley bonin Mr Lawton. Early English literature March 12, 2023 Throughout our readings this term, the theme of power and leadership is one that appears in multiple stories. In this analysis, I have chosen to discuss Beowulf, Macbeth, and The Seafarer to highlight the similarities and differences in how each work portrays this theme. Beowulf depicts leadership as being closely connected to heroism.
He took things too far which started with murder and betrayal. The play talks a lot about the characters who are and aren't leaders. Some might be leaders on the battlefield but when they obtain the power of royalty, it all goes to
Ambition is normally restrained by mortality, rabid actions or ideas introduced by someone’s ambition are shot down by someone’s moral compass. This emotion is expressed by Macbeth after his first encounter with the witches causing him to realize he could become king if he killed Duncan, however, the idea is almost silenced by his internal monolog, pleading in his brain that “Vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself / And falls on the other” (1.7). Macbeth in this quote is arguing with his ambition which is pleading for him to not kill Duncan, bringing up how overexpression of Ambition only causes one to fall on himself and fail miserably. This shows how his moral compass is trying to use logical reasoning to leash his ambition and prevent Macbeth from committing a heinous
The main characters in Macbeth that are in control are expressed to be, Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, and the three witches. Macbeth shows ambition but is also easily influenced. He follows through with what needs to be done to achieve his goal. Macbeth is in control of his actions but never follows control of the outcomes. “If chance will have me king, why chance may crown me, Without my stir.
Despite prophecies made by the Three Witches that foretell his invulnerability, Macbeth’s flawed character shines through and his impending doom is met. Turning to outside sources, the articles “What Makes a Leader” and “The Focused Leader” by Daniel Goleman describe the impact that certain traits have on leadership, and unfortunately for Macbeth, he does not possess any of them.
A good leader should ensure he is trustworthy, direct, and rational, while a bad leader is egotistical, dishonest, and secretive. “The problem with leadership is inevitably: who are we following? You need to be very careful who you select as your hero. " Jordan Peterson.
In Scene 7 Act 1 of Macbeth, Integrity of each character were displayed throughout. Macbeth had possessed a high integrity to his master at first but it was quickly changed to low integrity due to the motivation of his wife. Shakespeare used diction in the text to display integrity of Macbeth throughout this scene. Throughout, Macbeth displayed a Low Integrity, Macbeth couldn’t resist the idea of killing the king and Which is why he felled into his wife’s corrupted plans.
In the play Macbeth, Macduff’s balance of personal integrity and professional responsibility lead to his success of taking down Macbeth and his success as a leader. “He is noble, wise, judicious, and best knows the fits o’ th’ season... But cruel are the times when we are traitors and do not ourselves”(Act IV Scene II). Macduff left to help fight against Macbeth. This shows Macduff has integrity because he is willing to leave his family for the better of the kingdom.
He thinks he is able to become king because of the prophecy of the three witches. Macduff then kills Macbeth making him the new king who does not present tyrannical leadership skills. In the article “How Lack of Integrity and Tyrannical Leadership of Managers Influence Employee Improvement-Oriented Behaviors,”
At the beginning of William Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ the protagonist Macbeth is described as ‘brave’, ‘noble’ and ‘honourable’, however Lady Macbeth’s and Macbeths desire for power consumes them. Macbeth’s ambition overrides his conscience and transformed his greatest strength into his greatest weakness. Macbeth’s inability to resist temptations that led him to be greedy for power, Macbeth’s easily manipulative nature which allowed his mind to be swayed, Macbeth having no self control and his excessive pride was what allowed him to renew his previously honourable and celebrated title into one of an evil ‘tyrant’. Macbeth is led by the prophecies of the witches after they foretell he will become the Thane of Cawdor. Not only the witches, but also his wife easily manipulate Macbeth as she attacks his manhood in order to provoke him to act on his desires.
The road to a fatal outcome can be observed through many different qualities but excessive ambition is one of the main downfalls for most of us in society. Evil motivation due to uncontrollable and unnecessarily high ambition produces difficult obstacles in our lives. We could also become blind to making the right and moral decisions when our ambition is unrestrained. Additionally, all of the paths and routes for immoderate ambition leads to destruction and disorder. Another important note to keep in mind is that chaos and complications will be rooted from not only extravagant ambition but also poor decision making.
