Towards the beginning of the speech, Lincoln proclaims, “Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure” (747). This is where Lincoln defines his cause. By stating the war’s purpose, Lincoln brings his listeners to the same starting thought. He appeals to the audiences emotions in this speech by paying homage for the soldiers in the civil war, implying “that from these honored dead we take increased devotion … that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain” (Lincoln, 1863). Lincoln does this to emphasize the greatness of these soldiers, dying so that everyone can be equal, ending slavery and uniting the country. By saying this, it hit the audiences emotionally, making them feel mournful and sympathy towards the soldiers, especially those who had a family member fighting in that war. The Civil War was a very influential turning point in the history of the United States. The war not only strengthened the connection of the states, specifically between states in the north and south, but it also resulted in the end of the old way of life in the south, known as the old south. The way of life style in the Old South was loved by many, Rhett from Gone With the Wind being one of them. The second event that occured was the Civil War that went on from 1861 to 1865, and the reason behind the Civil War was to put an end to slavery, so slaves can have equality. The Final event that happens during the Civil war was the Gettysburg Address given by Abraham Lincoln and it was to honor the fallen soldiers who died during the Civil War or the Battle of Gettysburg, and he also gave a reminder that all men are created equal, which is kinda like people’s equality. The reason that people are fighting is because they all want equality and that means the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities.

There have been a lot of historical events revolving around this. Lincoln stated clearly in the Gettysburg address, “...a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal...” that is a fact. He spoke those words, marking the near end of the civil war. Which was a war over the argument of freedom for the slaves.
