A Man’s Insanity Hamlet’s sanity was debated. He had really started to show this when he had seen his father’s ghost. The being had told him to kill the king, Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius. Hamlet had started to have some noticeable bits of insanity. Hamlet had referred to the ghost as if it were a real person. Hamlet had talked to himself. There had been many rumors though that Hamlet had become insane. The guess that the reason why Hamlet was acting the way he was was because of his Father’s death. There had been many different examples of Hamlet’s possible insanity. There had also been signs that he may have been rather in love with death. That he was too attached to it.
Hamlet had been told to kill the king. He had this idea because he was told from the Ghost of his father, King Hamlet. He had planned to reveal that Claudius murdered the previous king. He wanted to show that through a play. He had asked for some actors to add a scene to hopefully gain some evidence that it was Claudius. He was able to get a reaction and was able to gain the evidence he needs to hopefully frame Claudius with the murder of his father. "Though this be madness, yet there is method in 't." (2.2.129-133) Hamlet had told the queen. Although, he was brushed off. He knew he had to take this into his own hands.

It was because of how he started acting after his father died. He was thought to be insane. The king, Claudius, had even thought of this. So, there wasn’t much trust in what Hamlet’s words. But that did not bother Hamlet. “The spirit that I have see May be the devil: and the devil hath powe. To assume a pleasing shape; yea, and perhaps, Out of my weakness and my melancholy. As he is very potent with such spirits. Abuses me to damn me. I'll have grounds. More relative than this. The play's the thing. Wherein I'll catch the conscience of the King.” (2.2.627-634) He wanted to have revenge for what happened to his
Hamlet really was insane because he genuinely was told to take revenge by the ghost of his father. Hamlet ran the risk of conversing with the devil, which was a thought that passed through his head, but he denied any potential
The topic of insanity commonly arises on many occasions, particularly in the law. The term “insanity” is defined as the “unsoundness of mind sufficient in the judgment of a civil court to render a person unfit to maintain a contractual or other legal relationship or to warrant commitment to a mental health facility” (Document A). In terms of the law, there exists an insanity defense, which is a plea that defendants are not guilty because they lack the mental capacity to realize that they committed a crime (Document C). This concept arises in several of Shakespeare's plays as well. In Hamlet, many readers claim that Prince Hamlet was actually mad, his actions guided by the grief he experienced when his father was murdered by his uncle King Claudius.
Having your father die is bad enough, but to have your mother marry your uncle, within a few weeks of your father’s death? Then to see the ghost of your dead father. That would drive anyone a little insane, but maybe not to the extent that everyone thought Hamlet was acting. Hamlet is torn between acting sane and letting everyone else see him as insane.
Also the way that he went from character to character exploiting his insanity, being very careful going to this person first then to another, and acting insane in front of them, all to make everyone think he was insane, including the most important character, Claudius. Once Claudius thought Hamlet was insane, he thought he was safe, and that he could carry out the rest of his plan. With the soliloquy, “To be...” Hamlet knew that the King was overhearing him, henceforth continuing on with his insane act. A great example is Hamlet’s “To be...” speech, when he was talking to Ophelia.
In his first soliloquy, he expresses his intense grief and inner conflict of wanting to commit suicide but not wanting to be punished by God. From this the audience can infer one of Hamlet’s fatal flaws; he is indecisive. He is constantly searching for certainty, since he is unable to make decisions without it. Although Hamlet is wary of the story given to the public to explain the King’s sudden death, it is not until the ghost confirms his suspicions and he uncovers the truth that he vows to “Remember thee!”. He suspects foul play was involved, yet he never acts on this uncertainty until certainty is provided for him.
In William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, Hamlet assumes the disguise of a man that has lost his mind. Hamlet uses this madness to masquerade around in such a way as to not draw attention to his true plan, to avenge his murdered father. Many readers debate as to whether Hamlet is truly mad, or whether he is fully aware of his actions and what he is doing. However, both sides of the debate can agree that Hamlet’s apparent madness is a key element of the play, Hamlet. There are many reasons as to why readers debate Hamlet’s madness.
In Hamlet, Shakespeare uses many references to sanity and insanity. Throughout the play, Hamlet goes back and forth between sanity and insanity, whether pretending to be insane just to mess with those he does not like or to save himself from getting in trouble. Hamlet is actually one of the smartest characters in the play, which is why he can pull off acting crazy so well. Shakespeare uses this idea of sanity and insanity to help the plot change and take a different directions. One of the most discussed topics of the Hamlet is whether Hamlet is insane or if he was just pretending the whole time.
The question of whether or not Hamlet was insane is of a never-ending debate. Was he always crazy? Was he always faking it? Or was he somewhere in between? In this paper I will share three different views and provide my own interpretation of Hamlet’s sanity.
It was hard for Hamlet to act crazy because he was still grieving over his father 's death and his mother not showing that she cares. Hamlet also lost Ophelia which makes his situation even worse than it was because he has no one in his. No family, no girlfriend, no one. Hamlet feels betrayed by his mother and feels like he can 't trust anyone. Shakespeare gives Hamlet these struggles in the play to amplify the mental and psychological events that make the reader feel bad about what all happened to Hamlet.
Instead of taking action and killing claudius, he questions whether the ghost was actually his father asking to revenge his death or the devil resembling his father to try to tempt him into murder. In No Fear Shakespeare from Sparknotes, Hamlet talks about his doubts to believe the ghost is actually his father or not by saying “May be the devil, and the devil hath power T’ assume a pleasing shape. Yea, and perhaps Out of my weakness and melancholy, As he is very potent with such spirits, Abuses me to damn me (Act 2 Scene 2 Page 24). This shows how Hamlet was indecisive and how the ghost of his father was one of the major reasons why he was indecisive.
Insanity is an idea that has been examined for a long time in numerous mediums such as films, music, plays, and even works of literature. William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” is no exception to that rule. Hamlet is one of Shakespeare’s most complex characters, and many scholars have been debating for centuries whether or not Hamlet is truly insane, or whether there is a particular reason for his odd behavior. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Hamlet merely pretends to be mad but in reality is sane.
He does this to see whether Claudius is guilty of his father’s murder or not. When the prologue actor enters, Hamlet says, “We shall know by this fellow. The players cannot keep counsel. They’ll tell all. ”(3.2.130-131).
Therefore, he decides to depend on Claudius's reaction to the play to help him validate those words. To prove my point, Hamlet said, " I’ll have these players play something like the murder of my father before mine uncle. I’ll observe his looks. I’ll tent him to the quick. If he do blench, I know my course.
Hamlet decides to kill Claudius because he knows that Claudius killed his dad. He needs to find proof that he did commit
He feels that without proof, the act that he’s about to perform will not be justified at all. Next is that Hamlet wants to fulfill his father 's command for justice yet has a hard time acting swiftly because he feels he must have proof. After Hamlet having the thought of his father’s spirit being the devil he feels that he needs proof before committing the fraud against king claudius. He feels that proof will lead to his conviction of that claudius being the murderer and leading to a righteousness way of doing it. Which is why he plans to use the play to get the proof that he needs to make his judge if getting revenge on Claudius is right and justice.
