Julia Marks Mrs. Phaneuf Ap Lit 14 April 2023 Obedience Kills For centuries, women have been bound to conform to a male world; what happens to women who fall victim to patriarchal control? The famous play Hamlet, a great tragedy written by William Shakespeare, is set in Elsinore, Denmark, during the 13th- 14th century. The play revolves around the story of Prince Hamlet, who is trying to avenge his father's death. Ophelia, a beautiful, delicate, well-behaved young woman, who is in love with the prince of Denmark, must constantly obey men throughout the play. Ultimately, she must decide between Hamlet and her father because she has no power. In her line, "I shall obey my lord" (1-3-145), Shakespeare dramatizes that young women with no power, …show more content…
Hamlet has murdered Polonius, and Ophelia comes to the King and Queen and starts singing a song. Her song alludes to her life story as she sings it to the audience. This is the first time that the audience sees the extreme heartache that she has been put through. As she speaks to her brother mid-song, she says, ¨ The false steward that stole his master's/ daughter¨(4-5-196/197). Ophelia is referring to a story when she states this line; however, she speaks this line because she believes that this alludes to her life. The false steward refers to Hamlet, whom she does not know killed her father. The master is her father, the word master could imply that Ophelia might have loved her father, but he was controlling, manipulating the man she was forced to obey. Her insanity comes from losing her controlling father. When a person has been held under the control of another, they often find themselves more in love with them than in fear of them. She hands the court multiple flowers; however, when she gets to, Violets, she says,¨I would/ give you some violets, but they withered all when/ my father died¨(4-5-207/209). The violets symbolize faithfulness, but Ophelia states that they all died with her father, giving us a theory that her faithfulness in her father died with him. He may have controlled her when he was alive, but now that he is dead, he no longer has that emotional hold on her. When Ophelia dies, the Queen comes to relay the message that Ophelia has died. She states, ¨One incapable of her own distress¨(4-7-203). The Queen wants us to believe that the insanity was too much for poor Ophelia. However, we may never know if she killed herself to relieve herself from the emotional grasp she was forced to hold on to or if it was purely an accident. We are told to believe that Ophelia is such a delicate woman, but how do we
Ophelia is having an internal conflict in which she has her own beliefs and values but is forced to follow the wishes of her father. After seeing the hypocrisy in her father and her lover Ophelia loses trust in love. Ophelia’s father states that “Then I’ll tell you. Believe that you are a foolish little baby for believing these “offers” are something real. Offer yourself more respect, or—not to beat this word to death—you’ll offer me the chance to be a laughing-stock.”
Her absorption of this pain and inability to express her feelings in a male supremacist society ultimately drives her mad. Fischer explains, Ophelia's utterances are never allowed free, natural flow; her truncated responses, her uncertain assertions, her conflicting loyalties irrevocably tied to a self-image that tries to accommodate her closest males' expectations - all are determined by external pressures. (3) As a woman living in the Middle Ages, Ophelia is expected to be obedient, acting mannerly and sophisticated to appeal to her male patriarchs. She accepts unauthorized advice from her father and brother, promising to keep their “good lessons” close to “her heart” (Shakespeare 1.3. 45-46).
During this scene, we see Ophelia literally melting into Larates arms, this helps show the intent by showing how truly upset she is about her fathers death, and that she's not crazy she just needs time to grief. A version that did not do as well of showing this is the Branagh version. In the Branagh version Ophelia was talking about the flowers, but there was nothing there making her seem delusional, this did not fit well because the setting and context just don't fit with the character
This is where we first see Ophelia deteriorating a person. The next thing that drove her off a cliff was her father being murdered. Claudius said “O, this is the poison of deep grief;
Another factor is the constant psychological abusive behaviour by Hamlet towards Ophelia. An example of Hamlet’s mistreatment occurred when he insulted her by stating she is a hoar and telling her to, “…Get thee to a nunnery…"(Act 3 scene 1).Ophelia’s victimization represents the patriarchal oppression she experiences which causes her to lose her mind as Hamlets comments are, “…words like daggers …” (Shakespeare).to her mental state. Lastly, the final instance which significantly impacts her mental well-being is the sudden death of her beloved father.
Hamlet once again fails to understand that Ophelia much like himself is only trying to stay loyal to her father, much like what he is doing himself. In addition, Hamlet blames woman for giving birth to such evil and deceiving men like Claudius and himself. When he was talking to Ophelia he told her "Get thee to a nunnery. Why wouldst thou be a breeder of sinners? I am myself indifferent honest, but yet I could accuse me of such things that it were better
Ophelia goes mad throughout the story. She is overwhelmed by the loss of her father and the rejection of Hamlet. Her character is seen spiraling down a dark path that also ends in death. Ophelia is depicted as not having control over her actions; speaking and acting erratically. While Hamlet is speaking erratically and behaving oddly, he still maintains control over his actions and movement throughout the story.
Ophelia’s death results from Hamlet's madness, his telling Ophelia that she needs to go to a nunnery, and Polonius's death. Hamlet telling Ophelia to go to a nunnery made Ophelia feel insecure. Especially when Hamlet told Ophelia that he would marry her just so she would sleep with him. Then, Hamlet comes back to Ophelia telling her that she needs to go to a nunnery. Which is basically calling Ophelia a whore, because a nunnery is like a whorehouse. Ophelia at this point felt very insecure about herself and she questioned her relationship with Hamlet.
For the duration of the play, Ophelia was portrayed as a naïve and submissive woman. Her passivity and powerlessness reinforce the voicelessness of women during the Elizabethan era. For example, “I shall obey, my lord” (I.iii.134) shows that Ophelia concedes to her father’s will, even though she believes Hamlet’s love is genuine. She is willing and expected to obey her father despite the fact that she still loves Hamlet, which emphasizes her character’s submissive nature. Furthermore, in Act I Laertes warns Ophelia that it would be shameful of her to love Hamlet, and she responds with “I shall the effect of this good lesson keep as a watchman to my heart” (I.iii.45).
The play suggests that Ophelia takes her own life or does not struggle for life because of her
Her death was doubtful” (5.1.234). Queen Gertrude says this to Laertes to let him know of the news about Ophelia. Ophelia ends up going insane and committing suicide from the way Hamlet uses her and the harmful love he provides

The cause of Ophelia’s death has been debated over the years, was it a suicide
Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark” written in 1602 is a signature play written by Shakespeare. It deals with the supernatural, betrayal, treachery, murder and revenge all of which are components that Shakespeare successfully uses in numerous other plays that he authored. In this analysis we will examine Shakespeare’s Hamlet and his characters thoughts as he finds out about the murder of his father from a specter, the betrayal by his father’s brother to usurp the throne that should have been Hamlet’s and marry his mother, Hamlet’s accidental slaying of Polonius, Hamlet’s rejection of and the suicide or accidental death of Ophelia to the climatic tragic last scene where, Hamlet, the King, the Queen and Ophelia’s brother
