The Crucible, Arthur Miller takes the reader into the society and community of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Introducing him or her to a densely populated cast of characters who represent all different sorts of personalities. Miller exposed just how easily and how quickly paranoia can spread throughout a society, and to what lengths people will go to protect the values and the institutions that they consider to be sacred. A tragic hero dies a good man when brought to trial over nothing more than child’s play and dishonesty. Miller dramatized his characters nicely, pitting extreme types against one another to show just how infectious and ridiculous paranoia can become …show more content…
"My wife will never die for me! I will bring your guts into your mouth but that goodness will not die for me!" (Act Four, page 1248) Proctor ultimately viewed his decision as the last chance he had to honor his wife and soon to be born child. Besides the individual guilt he was relieving himself of, John Proctor knew that to lie would have been the wrong thing to do when it came down to being Puritan. He knew that the society in Salem was didentegrating at a rapid pace and in the end he refused to subject himself to their corruption. At one point John proclains to the twon’s authorities. “ You are pulling Heaven down and raising up a whore.” (Act three, page 1262) during that time not many knew how right he was, and of course, soom after his death, people realized he was rought, John proves to the community that even though he might not have been perfect, he was still a good and virtuous personinsede, who would have rathered died a saint than to live as a liar. In the end, Proctor became quite the maty by diplaying that having goodness wth God came first. Eventually, John Proctor gained more from the geroic decisionn to die, than he prbably would have if he had lied to stay alive. Even Elizabeth, his wife, knew that dieing he was feigning something he had been searching for, for a long time. “He have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him." (Act Four, page 1273) Only as time went on, and the people of Salem realized how biased they had been, did the memory of John’s courage, as well at the real that refused to live as liars, truly stand out to prove that the society had made a horrible mistake by mudering these heroic and saintly people. John Proctor's main fatal flaw
The Crucible by Author Miller is a historical fiction based of of the Salem witch trails. During this period people where filled with greed, pride and authority. With the time being so tense made people greed and thirst for power a dangerous thing. The first ways greed was shown was through Abigail. Abigail’s greed came from the love for John Procter.
John Proctor made many decisions during the movie. He believed that his family came first. He was willing to disgrace his name by admitting to adultry instead of let his wife hang for witchcraft. He signed a confession admitting to witchcraft, even when the audience knew he wasn’t guilty. He signed a false confession in order to save his wife.
Proctor died as a martyr for others to understand the value of honor, however, he buried the truth with him. Instead, he should have defended his innocence as a pure Puritan instead of dying as a condemned warlock in the eyes of the court; this would have disproven the court’s suspicion
Miller’s use of rhetorical strategies is used to describe the audience's viewpoint during real-life time events through the fictionalized story of the Salem in which it demonstrates witch trials in Massachusetts Bay Colony during the 1692-3 in which were the same situation. The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, was written during the late 40s and the early 50s illustrates the effects of paranoia during the “Red Scare”. Paranoia can make people alter their future outcomes with their actions when fear is introduced upon society, questioning ethnic morals will lead to consequences that shall be brought upon if broken. The situation brought tension between society, leading to the loss of each other and betrayal upon each other. Miller's use
Cameron Oldfield Mrs. Brincks English III 15 November, 2015 The Crucible and Red Scare Imagine being thrown in jail, blamed for something that you didn't do .The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is a story about how certain propaganda and false accusations can ruin lives, just like in the case of the Red Scare. Although 1692 the Salem witch trials and the Red Scare were over 200 years apart, The similarities are striking. both trials used intimidation, fear, hatred, and false accusations to ruin innocent lives. Both trials resulted in terrible outcomes, with both ending with innocent people being put to death and shunned from society.
Throughout the Salem Witch Trials John Proctor never accepts the lies of the people, he sees through the fear and tries to convince the people that they are making an error. Proctor maintains a rock-solid belief during the entire story, and his beliefs do not change, however his attitude toward the people in Salem does change as the trials grow in size. It’s the fact that Proctors perpendicular beliefs leading to his death that make him a tragic hero and a martyr, since his final refusal to accept the lies send him to the rope. Proctors changes throughout the story also cause the people of the village to look down on him after outbursts of rage.
Then, John was accused of witchcraft. He was given the choice to tell the truth and be prosecuted or confess to a crime he didn’t commit and be set free. He chose to tell the truth and got sent to jail. During this time, he said “... what is John Proctor? I think it is honest” (page 138).
John Proctor was a man of honor and had a well respected name in the town of Salem. Sadly he died tragically but as a hero. He was hanged because he was accused of doing the devil’s work. He was given the chance to save his life if he admitted on a piece of paper that he was working with the devil but he refused to tell that lie. He wanted his sons to be able to walk the streets without being shunned from the world because they deserved better.
Gossip’s role The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller is set in The Salem Witch Trial. During this time in history, religion was far more important than actual law and reason. In this book’s case, legalistic Christianity decided the devil himself was roaming the streets of Salem. Anyone who seemed as though they had bumped into the devil was killed.
Protection and Its Effects A main motivation for characters’ actions in The Crucible was protection of themselves or others. There are many causes and motives for the cast of The Crucible to act as they did, but the one that stuck out to me was the need to protect and save the people of Salem, whether it be for selfish reasons or compassion for others. The focus will land on Abigail and Mercy, Parris, Mary Warren, Proctor, Elizabeth, Giles Corey, and Reverend Hale, who all share a common motive within the story, and that’s to protect someone from the events that occur. Of course, other motivations for the events in the story exist, but as a more personal push for action, it seems fitting to put more focus on protecting themselves and others.
He cared greatly about his family and wife even though Elizabeth was often distant towards him. In the end of the play, Proctor chooses to die rather than sign his confession, ratting out his friends and ruining his good name in the town. He did this to protect the reputation of his children so they won’t have to grow up with a lying father. Lying went against Protctors’ views and that ideal is prevalent throughout the entire play. It is revealed that as soon as he had an affair with Abigail, he confessed to Elizabeth the next day because of the guilt he was carrying around.
Published in 1952, during a period of cold war tensions, which culminated in the ideological witch trials of the mcarthy era in America; The crucible by Arthure miller is set in 1692 during the witch trials in salem massachusetts. The author has used allegory to position the reader to draw parrelels betweeen the to time periods and critisize the persecution that occured in both eras. One of the main themes that Miller has used to portray this viewpoint is the representation of personal integrity. Integrity is the quality of having strong moral pronciples. This is acheived through strongly contrasted characterisation of characters such as Abigail williams and and Rebecca Nurse, aswell as the inclusion of textual features such as irony, symbolism
The first impressive characteristic of John Proctor is his bravery. Speaking out against the “afflicted” girls in the way he did could cause serious question of him as a person. From the court’s standpoint John could be seen as directly opposing the court, which would have him jailed, or could even have him be accused of witchcraft. Also, he would have had to have known that Abigail Williams would have immediately accused him of being a witch once he spoke out against them. However, that did not stop him from delivering the truth to the court.
( Arthur Miller, 1179 ) In other words, John is trying to make the court and community of Salem to realize that it is all just insane, and part of it is his fault because he committed a sin and now the consequences of this sin is coming as vengeance in his wife and fear in other innocent people. When Elizabeth Proctor is put in jail, Proctor tries to do everything to prove she is innocent, he said his most hurtful sin ruining his name in Salem, but not even that confession could prove her innocence. And Proctor has gone wild. “I say-
The Crucible by Arthur Miller, is a play about the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Many people were accused of witchcraft in the Salem “courts”. Their corrupt political justice system was demonstrated through the use of false accusations and spectral evidence. Spectral evidence was the driving force of how people were accused of witchcraft and working with the devil. Abigail in open court accuses Sarah Good of working with the devil, “I saw Sarah Good with the devil” (Miller, 189).
